On a purely logical note, if the guilty party is sentenced to spend the rest of their life in prison, with no possibility of parole, what argument is there against making that time as short as possible?

The eventual outcome is the same. The guilty party still dies in prison.

There actually are arguments for giving life term prisoners the choice of Euthanasia after a period of time in jail. That's not the same as mandated execution. The issues are not the Dave, even if there are moral issues in both situations.

Massachusetts may be against the death penalty, per se, but the sentiment around this case and the harm that was done, both physical and otherwise, may persuade the jury to go with the ultimate penalty.

It is a federal case so regardless how Massachusetts feel about it. it s very possible he could get the death penalty and like Texas the federal government does carry out the death penalty ,oppose to the rest of the states where a death row inmate could die in prison of old age before the penalty is carry out

I think the point was the jury is composed of Massachusetts residents.

I wonder if we'll get a sentence decision next week? That should make for some interesting discussion.

The sentencing phase has been continued until April 21, the day after this years marathon. I'm not sure who's decision it was, (probably the judge), but they did not want the sentencing to be going on the same time as the marathon was taking place.
