Changing Last Name

hey guys!

So my fiance looked on the website on friday, and our case was approved! yay but now we have a whole bunch of questions.

It's probably a stupid question, but is there any special process I would need to undergo to change my last name once we're married since I'm foreign to the US?

or even is there anything we have to do differently to obtain a marriage license?

Once married you can use your married name to apply for AOS and EAD.

The marriage certificate acts as your change of name. So then once you have you EAD you can go to a social security office and change your name on that and then you can change your name with everything!

Getting a marriage license varies state to state, usually requires some valid ID and a birth certificate.

In Ohio I had to bring my passport and that was it.

Just google the state you'll be living in and obtaining a license.

For the US, use your marriage certificate as the legal proof of name change. As stated above, file for AOS in your new married name.

For your home country, it depends. For me, Australia won't accept a foreign marriage certificate as proof of name change, so I had to do a name change application in Australia before I could get my Australian passport in my new married name. It varies from country to country.
