Hey everyone!

Been a while since I posted...

I figured this would've been stickied but, it's not.

I got my T4 from EI. What do I do? I've called the people where I did my taxs previously years and they're more than useless! I've called three times now with, no response.

I'm assuming I have to do this myself? Which, I have never done before, and I don't want to mess it up!

Any advice would be great, Thank you!!!

I'm not exactly sure what you're asking. Are you asking how to enter your T4E into your Canadian Income Tax forms? Are you asking if you have to submit your Canadian Income Tax? Maybe clarify a little please! :)

31 Jan 2013 -- NOA1 from NBC

6 Mar 2013 -- I130 transferred to Orlando local field office (which started the whole nightmare)

Mar 2013 to October 2013 no one would tell us where our case was or what was happening. I suspected the whole time it was just sitting in a corner somewhere in the Orlando field office. I was pretty much right.

October 2013 - get congressman involved. Congressman asks USCIS repeatedly about our case but they won't even tell them anything.

31 Jan 2014- finally get NOA2!!!! (we think the nightmare is over!)

NVC

Our case was not sent from the Orlando field office as it should have been. The nightmare continues. We kept calling NVC and asking if they received our case, and they always said "NO" and that we had to wait 90 business days for it to be received. We called USCIS during this time and they kept telling us it had been sent. After the 90 days of agonizing frustration, NVC then started telling us we had to wait 120 business days. I got our congressman involved again, and they told the congressman it was sitting at the Orlando office this whole time (just as I thought it was!).

22 Apr 2014 -- NVC received
16 May 2014 -- NVC case number assigned
24 May 2014 -- AoS and IV bills paid

28 May 2014 -- Sent AoS and IV Packages

6 June 2014 -- documents scanned

18 July 2014 -- false checklist from NVC

21 July 2014 -- Case complete

28 July 2014 -- receive case complete email from NV

30 July 2014 -- interview booked! September 11 here I come!

Enter in the T4E under the income part where you enter all your T slips. Then print out your tax return, and mail it in. You can only netfile in Canada.

You have to file a paper return with your T4E. Once you are no longer in Canada you cannot email or netfile your return. You may be able to find someone who can do the Canadian tax return and then mail it in for you.

You can claim the T4E income on your 1040 return in the USA and use form 2555 to exclude the income

I'm not working in the US. This all is so confusing! So just mail my slip into Canadian revenue?

No you have to complete a Canadian tax return, just like normal, but using the T4E slip instead of a T4.

And you are a resident of the USA? You have to file a return unless you made under the threshold to file. If you file MFJ (married filing jointly) you get the biggest return. However you and your spouse can file MFS (separately) if you choose, and the threshold to file is higher (it's like 3500 for MFJ and like 9k or something for mfs)

It doesn't matter where a US resident or citizen works in the world, they have to complete a US return. Form 2555 excludes your foreign income from being also taxed in the USA.

No a have to do a tax return. Just like you did when you lived in Canada.

The link has the link to the paper form at the bottom you have to fill out.

Because you didn't work in Canada, there are other forms to fill out and let them know so you can get all your money back.

You will need any t4s from regular working in Canada as well. But normally you can download those from the service Canada website. You can request a password from them if you don't have one. Thankfully you have more time to file your Canadian return than you do to file your US return.


If you have an RRSP or bank account that makes interest you're supposed to report that sort of stuff. If it's over 10k then you need to report it on your US taxes.

oh no, i keep nothing in my candian account but a few bucks left over from transfering EI. I almost should've just banked everything over there and let it sit until the exchange rate was better.

Okay, I'll report back if I have any issues, which I'm sure I will.. I'm a little slow when it comes to this kind of stuff; not the brightest bulp. Thank you for your paitences and help! I really appreciate it!!

i phoned revenue canada and said I can file electrically, he said do you have a Canadian Address, Said yeah I use my dads house and he said thats no problem

Vancouver Canada to San Diego [Rancho Bernardo to be exact]
