What country does her passport belong to? If her country is not on the list of countries on the visa waiver program of UK, she needs a British visa. She will need to go to British embassy to apply for a visa or look up for "British embassy in <your country>" online and apply for transit visa or visitor visa.

Thank you guys for your replies. My wife is from Kenya. In this case,I think we will try temporary visa in transit, though I don't know whether one can apply that at the airport,or prior.

She absolutely needs a visa. I have gone through London couple times when I had a Green card and they require a visa even to transit let alone exiting the airport.

She would need a visitor in transit visa.

Just wondering why and what she would be doing?

My guess would be to meet friends/families instead of hanging out in the airport for eight hours which can be boring.....just guessing.

Thank you guys for your replies.I didnt know what she wanted to do in the UK,but in the end she dropped the idea due to the hassle involved in getting the visa.

Your replies were appreciated
