I am a Canadian citizen, I have applied to some jobs at universities and colleges in USA and was told that they do not offer sponsorship. I will have to obtain the work visa on my own to take the position. I am not sure how to apply for this on my own. I understand that to work in the USA, I need a H1-B visa.

Can someone please provide me with some guidance on how I can get the legal right to work in the USA on my own?

You need work authorisation. Most people on here get it through marriage, you could also look at investment, EB5, or of you have relations in the US who could sponsor you.

You do need an employer to sponsor you...You cant apply on your own... The only other ways for Canadian to work in the US is to obtain a Green Card via marriage, family sponsorship (parents or siblnigs) or to invest 1M $ in a business.

Canadians can't participate in the Diversity Lottery so options are actually quite limited. Most US employers wont sponsor work visas these days, unless you have something they really need to offer. The work force is varied enough in the US as is so the need for foreign workers isn't that high.

What about the TN visa? I heard that I can get it at the border with proper documentation and it is valid for one year for any specific employer.

I also have a question in general about applying for jobs in the US. I am looking for jobs related to teaching or research at colleges and universities. Most ads don't seem to say if they will sponsor or not. I have submitted applications to a few but I am not sure how to determine if I am eligible to apply (requiring sponsorship) and whether I should even bother applying.

I think you need "extraordinary ability" to file for that. You must know that because you filed for it.

Sure thing. That is the condition that people qualified for work at Universities and Colleges frequently fullfil.
