Foreign workers fill hundreds of Sacramento-area IT jobs

a $200 million Employment Development Department project, but with the exception of two managers, everyone inside the office is from outside of the U.S. They are employed by Deloitte, a major U.S. IT company hired by the state to create and manage its Unemployment Insurance Modernization project. The mostly Indian nationals are allowed to work here under a visa program called H-1B.

Tech companies like Microsoft, Intel, Google and Facebook say they need hundreds of thousands of foreign workers to fill jobs here because American colleges can't crank out computer science grads fast enough. In 2013, the industry lobbied Congress on the issue to the tune of almost $14 million.

Those companies, who need workers with highly specialized knowledge like computer expertise, are awarded the visas through a lottery process. It's allowed under the Immigration and Nationality Act and administered by the U.S. Department of Labor. The visas can be valid as long as six years.

I find it amazing they can't find enough people to fill these jobs, but I am not in IT nor anything in the field

I live near Plano Texas and we have flocks of Indians working there on IT jobs and most came here on Work Visas.

I remember a few years ago USA was importing Registered Nurses by the boatload to USA for the Nurse Shortage, How we ever got a nurse shortage in USA is beyond my understanding, It only takes a 2 year degree from a community to become a Registerd Nurse in USA.

We need to concentrate on filling our own needs, instead of always importing labor........

Right... Lets remember that Microsoft spoke to a committee to lobby for more H-1B visas and stated they could not find workers in the U.S. - earlier that same week they announced layoffs of 18,000 IT workers. The proper way to say it is they can't find enough "low priced" IT workers.. Which is fine but lets be honest about it.

I've mentioned before on numerous occasions I was one of few Americans working in my building and that I work for an Indian company (they have been a very good company to me BTW)... In the last few months this has changed drastically - every foreigner I work with here that had their visa up for renewal has had them rejected and returned home. We are at about 50/50 foreign workers now and things seem to be going the opposite direction they were. Go figure.

The indian company is very good to you, in order to keep you around for the racial balance (diversity workplace).

Otherwise you will be laid off for cheaper IT workers.

US should groom its own IT engineers, encourages students to take up IT/engineering courses.

I think its less to do with new graduates and more to do with how these entities operate. They churn employees and older employees are losing out. They like keeping employees for 2-3 years and by abusing the visa program they get exactly that.

Says the person with an immigrant wife. This thread is about legal alien workers working legally. Remember, this is an immigration site and most of the people here have a spouse who started working once they got here.
