Forgive me ..how do you prove that you own your car?

I called Honda Canada for a Recall Clearance Letter .

I called Honda America for Compliance letter.. and in order to get that, they want copy of driver license/ registration ( green paper/card) and bill of sale.

I am sorry but I shredded my bill of sale once that car was paid off ( I bought new and financed via Honda Canada).

I called dealership to see if they can give me copy of bill of sale but they have changed computer system's so they no longer have but Honda Canada should be able to provide as dealership would have sent off bill of sale to them when car was purchased. Called Honda Canada back who passed me to Honda Finance.

They will send me contract that I signed with them ( when I did financing??) and the fact that car is fully paid off.

Do you think Honda America will accept this as proof of ownership?

What about if I go to Service Ontario and get them to provide list of all the owner of my car ( extra $ out but...)??

I don;t recall what they have in Canada but here in the US you have your car title document once you own it full and clear.

I can't speak to what Honda is looking for.... but I work in Auto Insurance in Ontario... the green ownership is your proof you own the car.... I don't understand why they would want the BOS....

That makes no sense. YOUR information has no bearing on whether the car is compliant or not. Why are you calling Honda America and not Honda in Canada. Isn't that where you need to get it? They should just issue it based on the VIN. I would call in and try to speak to someone more knowledgeable about it!! When I did mine though GM it was a piece of cake and it was all in Canada!

When I got my compliance letter, I only needed the VIN, make, model and year and they did the rest. Hopefully the person you spoke with is just confused.

I am concerned about the Bill of sale. I cannot figure out if I need it or not. I know I need proof of ownership, but is that just registration (I am in Alberta) or do I need the Bill of sale?

I did find out to get a title in the US once I am there I only need my registration for the DMV, but it POE that I am worried about.

I would call them again and see if you get a difference answer first... especially for the compliance letter, I don't know why it would matter to them. All they need should be a VIN

Yes you'd think that all you'd need is the green registration card to show as ownership proof but....

I called Honda America as FAQs on Honda.com site says

"Usually, Canadian Honda vehicles can be taken with you when you are moving to the United States. There are exceptions based on whether a vehicle complies with State and Federal Safety Regulations for the United States. If a vehicle is eligible to be brought into the United States, you will need to obtain specific documentation to produce either at the border crossing point, and/or at the state motor vehicle licensing office at your destination, as follows:

• You will need a recall clearance letter from Honda Canada stating that there are no outstanding recalls on the vehicle. Contact the Honda Canada Customer Relations Department on our toll-free line, at 1-888-946-6329 and request a "Recall Clearance Letter". Have your 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) available when you call, as we must quote it in the letter we prepare for you. Recall Clearance Letters will only be provided for individuals who are exporting a Honda for their own personal use. Letters are not supplied for commercial exporters of used vehicles.

• You will also need a compliance letter from American Honda to stipulate that your Canadian vehicle complies with the applicable U.S. safety and emissions requirements. You must contact American Honda at their toll-free number, 1-800-999-1009, and request a "Compliance Letter". Have your VIN ready as American Honda will require it in order to provide the letter."

So I got my Clearance Letter from Honda Canada and am waiting for more info from Honda Canada financial . Just to be on the safe side, I bought and am waiting for $20 a Used Vehicle package which Service Ontario says will include a Bill of Sale. If Honda America does not accept a document that shows me as sole owner of the car, I give up!

Will let you know what happens when I get & submit that info to Honda America.

Update: spent $20 on a used vehicle package and found it useless. The section "bill of sale" is if/when you actually are selling your car. Sigh. (sorry but what did I know? I usually keep my cars until they conk out). Honda Financial was able to send me copy of the actual invoice . Emailed that off to Honda America so now waiting on their reply.

Anyone imported their car via a car importer/shipping company or such? If so, can I have some recommendations?
