Last name - marrying while L1 is being extended with maiden name, but want to change last name and file for AOS with new name

Hi all,

I've seen other questions and answers on the name change but don't think I found an answer to my particular question. Also, I do apologize if I'm posting on the wrong board :(
I'm here on L1, which expires in less than a month. My employer is still working on the extension approval and I have no idea where they are in whatever process that might be. However, my fiancé also wants us to get married and apply for my AOS ASAP, and we've been leaning towards me adding his last name to mine (hyphenated). As far as I understand, it's easier to change the name while we're at it in the city hall (rather than after we've applied for AOS or got the GC), but I'm concerned that in that case my L1 extension approval will have the wrong (maiden) name. I don't think there will be a problem at the US embassy back home when I do my interview for extension - I'm only handing them my passport and the extension approval, they probably wouldn't even know about the name change. Right?
Should we just go ahead and get married and have my last name changed while waiting for my L1 extension approval, or should we wait until I get the new visa, or should we wait with my name change (although I wonder if me taking his name would make it easier for us when we apply for AOS)? Does the need for me to change my SSN card after I change the name (I'm assuming the number stays the same?) factor in?
Thanks!
