Now waiting for Social Security Number

Now that I've gotten my spouse a green card and we are here in USA, it seems there is another long wait.

When filing the IV application we choose the option to get a Social Security Number (Page 27 of this PDF):

http://www.uscis.gov/sites/default/files/files/nativedocuments/M-618.pdf

But we are waiting more than 3 weeks for the Social Security Number.

So we rang SS and they know nothing about my spouse at all.

And they also said an application for a new SS number can take 3 months!

It's as though the NVC have not transferred our documents to SS after arriving in US port of entry..

So we rang the NVC and they created a "service request" to find out more info.

Basically my spouse cannot take up employment as the employer needs to see the Social Security card.

Only about 50% of the SSN requests actually get transferred at your POE. It's a very bad track record. Your spouse needs to take his/her passport to your local office and apply in person. It should take less than a week to get his/her card back in the mail.

Don't wait.

Hello jman0war,

I would not be surprised if NVC made a mistake of not forwarding that information to Social Security office. At the same time I think it would make sense if you contact your local Social Security office, take your spouse with you, and file for Social Security number. Don't you will get a lot of waiting time from Social Security office which probably could be four months, usually you will get the card within the next 4 to 6 weeks. I think you should have done that the week your spouse landed here, but then again who would know the efficiency of NVC.

Best wishes for you and your spouse.

When was your spouse POE? I am still waiting on my green card but I already received my SSN 9 days after my POE. When did he/she received the GC?

POE was Dec 31, 2014.

We are still waiting for the actual GC to arrive. The officer at POE warned us it could take up to a year to receive it. That's why they put a temporary visa stamp in her passport.

My POE is December 30th..
