Health Coverage penalty fee

I came here in January 2014 with a K-1 visa. Applied for AOS in February. I finally got my work permit in April. I was not covered by any health insurance company until May, when I finally got a job and I could afford health insurance policy.

Do I have to pay the fee for not having health care coverage for four months? Those four months I was waiting for my work permit/green card to be processed.

Thanks in advance!

It was mandatory in 2014 as well as this year 2015. The penalty on a 2014 tax return is not as stiff because it was the first year. And as stated elsewhere, there were extensions and such that it might not apply. If you are not insured now for 2015, then a year from now when you do the 2015 tax return, the penalty will be a higher percentage of your income than the 2014 penalty. Edited by Nich-Nick

My husband came in march but he didnt get on my plan till september, we were married in april. (I had to wait for my documents to be changed) when i put that info into turbo tax, because i had health coverage since april, and he lived outside of u.s. Any penalty was waived. The penalties for 2014 tax year is 1% of your income, but a minimum of $95 a person. For 2015 tax year it will be 2% of your income but a minimum of $395 a person

My TurboTax is telling me I'll have to pay the penalty for my daughter and wife, as they weren't insured for 2014, having been here since Sept. 23. Yours didn't tell you to pay the penalty for your husband, even though he's been here the same amount of time as you? Just wondering. I'm extremely upset about this, as I didn't have a chance to insure either of them because by the time they got their SSNs it was outside of the enrollment period for my job. :(

But once you got married it should have let you add them because it was a life change. I think my husband was waived because i had insurance since april, but i only added him in september.

I couldn't add her when we got married because she didn't have a social at the time, and my work requires anyone who you add as a dependent on your policy to have a social otherwise they can't be added. It's dumb. So you added your husband in September and that's why you didn't have to pay the penalty?

Yes but my plan was a marketplace plan that qualified for a subsidy, so once my documents were changed i sdded him to my plan and it said that the penalty was waived. So i dont know if it was because i had insurance since april.

Wait let me ask you. In turbo tax did you put that they lived outside the u.s. Or foreign country

No, I couldn't because Turbo Tax says they had to have lived outside the US for the entire year, which isn't the case because they came in September. Any other ideas?

So you just selected foreign national and moved forward with that? Thanks for the input.

I went back through my return and since husband lived in u.s. More than 6 month he is a resident of texas. Then onthe question for health, i chose partially covered, and it let me choose the months each household member was covered for. Then based on that it said penalty was waived
