We got married but we would like to apply for a social security number. Do we have to wait for adjustment of status or because we are still within our 90 day window can we obtain one even if we have already gotten married? Please advise!

Thanks!

Right, just don't use your married name. If you do, then you have to wait for your status to be adjusted.

I am currently in the same situation. Just got here last July 2014, married August 2014 then applied for SS number last week of August but I used my married name. Then I received a letter stating I need to wait for my status to be changed or if I have a work authorization card.

So then we applied for my green card and work authorization last Sept 2014. My work authorization card arrived last December 19, 2014 then went to the SS office the next Monday and showed my work authorization card in my married name. Then they told me to wait for my SS number.

I went to follow up second week of January 2015 and they said they are waiting from the immigration so I scheduled an appointment to the immigration and they said it's not in their hands anymore since I already received my work authorization, and that should be fine. They gave me the contact number of Dep't of Homeland Security for the SS office to call if they need verification of my data which I gave to the SS office. SS office said they will call them and send me my SS card immediately once everything is ok or send me a mail letter for an update.

Well... Until now , no update yet. I read somewhere in this forum before that someone was issued an SS number using her work authorization card so I don't know what is the issue for my case.

Anyway, tomorrow we will go back to SS office to follow up since it is already been one month since I submitted my work authorization and no update yet. They should've sent me a mail but nothing so.

I just hope they didn't forget to review my data.
