HI everyone, Happy Thanksgiving!

I do have a question. I am a US Lawful Permanent Resident, I am planning to go to the Philippines in Dec 27 of this year and coming back to the USA (leaving Philippines) Jan 7, 2015, but my Philippine Passport is expiring July 5, 2015. I called the Phil embassy in DC and was told I have to leave Philippines by Jan 5 to make sure my passport is within 6 months validity, however I also looked at cbp website and saw US will not look at my passport when I come back but my green card instead. I am scared that if I leave Philippines on the 7th, they're not gonna let me go. I'm planning to go to DC on Dec 19 to renew my passport and was told I can borrow the old passport while waiting for the new one to use it when I go in Dec 27. Is it possible that the Phils immigration would let me leave on Jan 7 if I show my receipt stating my new passport is on its way. Please help me because I'm so confused right now. If you have left the Philippines with an expiring passport, please share your experience. Thank you so much! (L)

I understand that, however the Philippines valid passport rule is different. They won't consider your passport valid and won't let you travel if it expires in less than 6 months.

That is not correct..they will never allow to get new visa if your passport will expire less than 6 months from the time they will issue any visa..but having just a vacation is totally different..if they will ask..simply tell them you will renew it as soon as you comeback here..

what is the purpose of the exact expiration date when they won't let you travel because its within 6 months of expiration date.

Technically you can travel until the last day of your passport validity. I've returned to the PH with only a few days validity left on my passport.

As for leaving the PH, that is a different story. Most countries won't admit you if you have less than 180 days left on your passport (Some require only 90days). They (Philippine exit immigration) are merely enforcing the other countries' rules. There's no point in letting you leave since you won't likely get admitted by your destination country anyway.

So, I also emailed the U.S. Customs about my concern. And this is their exact reply.

-You will be OK returning to the US. The 6 month rule for passports does not apply to US permanent residents or Philippine citizens. I hope this helps.-

I'm still going to DC and have my passport renewed, keep the receipt with me and borrow my old passport. I will also ask a Philippine exit immigration officer when I get to the Philippines so I know when to come back. I have an open ticket coming back, if they say I have the leave the Phils before the 6 month rule I'll just leave the 4th. I'll let y'all know what happens when I come back in January! Thank you guys so much for your help!
