Hi Everyone,

Its been three years since i have been on this website.I would like my mother in law to come up her on a visitor visa. My husband just receive his ten year green card. I know he can file for her but its to much money right now for the citizenship and filing for her. My question is there anyway we can improve her chances of getting a 10 year visitor visa for now. When she goes for the interview, they will ask her why she want to come here. Our daughter birthday is coming up and that could be a reason. She doesnt have any property or anything in Jamaica. Thanks

If she has little to no ties (job, property, etc) unfortunately she likely won't obtain a visa. Sadly they won't care about your daughter's birthday and family in the USA may be even more of a hindrance. She needs some strong ties job, property (apartment lease perhaps?), employment letter, utility bills, the onus is on her to prove that she has a reason to return:

She would have to prove to the satisfaction of the US consular official that she has significant ties to Jamaica such that she would return to Jamaica after her US visit is completed. Such ties could include, property, house ownership, current stable employment, etc. Each visitor visa applicant is presumed to have immigration intent, and must prove that they are not trying to immigrate to the US.

She will be filing on her own not your husband. It cost $160nto file for a visitor Visa. She just needs to show more in Jamaica to return than whats in US. With a son, daughter in law, gramd daughter. Wat does she have in jamaica to return to?

Travel to a G20 country for a trip and return. That would help her case a lot.

OP,

IMO, by all means have your MIL apply if the $160 application fee isn't an issue.

However, be mindful of quite a few VJ threads that allude to the observation that most

(if not all applications) are decided even before the interview takes place and many

times, "proof of ties" paperwork that are brought to the interview aren't asked for.

This is what I've gathered from the many posts I've read on VJ concerning Visitor Visa's.

I'm personally not at all giving my input to dissuade you, rather I would like to point out

as I've mentioned here.

Good luck! $160 seems a small price to pay (literally and figuratively) to find out if she'll

be approved.

Just my two cents FWIW.

Regards

It also depends on her age, as older parents tend to get approved along with their proof of returning.

Indeed. In fact, after a certain age the applicant isn't required to attend the in-person interview.

Clarification: At least for the USEM, Manila, Philippines. Perhaps that's the standard for all embassies?

By all means she should apply

If she has no property , get a lease contract for apt/house she lives in.

If she has ties to her church have pastor give the good sister a letter on letter-head

Get a job letter If employed, if not show her income if self-employed & NIS card with payments

Decent bank statement Do not chunk money in the acct right B4 interview *they check with the banks)

If she has a husband G/kid or others she care for show proof (she has to return)

Her age can work for her.many older Jamaican ladies don't want to run away in the cold (cultural)

She should not offer info not asked for

Don't say she is coming to see and HELP with the baby

Listen to question asked & give a brief answer to specific question

Do not act anxious or nervous just keep a positive aura

They look at the applications B4 interview & almost have minds made up the applicant must

prove no immigrant intent.and she can apply whenever I have known elderly ppl who get visas

without mountains of proof

If your mother - in-law is old then she has better chance. Just apply.. $160 isn't too much.
