If it isn't a place with a big jobs market then applying for jobs then telling them you cant work for 4 months or so might burn your bridges with those employers as they'd see it as wasting their time and when you can work they might not look at you again.

Although boiler makes a good point that if its a sales job with high staff turnover they might wait and keep you in mind as those employers are desperate for new workers all the time.

Your fiance should probably slow down with the enthusiasm for you to get a job either way!

The bottom line here is you cannot work. You won't be able to work until at least late March.

Applying for jobs is pointless.

Tell her that.

You cannot work and are taking up and wasting their time when they could be finding someone who can.

You haven't even gotten married yet or better yet even started the paperwork enabling you to work.

She is naive if she dosent understand that you cant work for at least 3 months.

This request from your other half, is somewhat useless, does she not know, that you need an EAD to work? does she know what an EAD si?

You must be married to apply for AOS part of the process.

I HOPE you have your SS card, if you wait until after you are married, you have major problems! We certainly did!

I wonder what's behind the pressure? Maybe she just needs re-assurance that your dream is going to work - and for her that may mean a steady job. Perhaps words are not enough, and after the employer offers you the job, but you can't take it for 3 months, she will feel better in herself that it's going all be ok...

Is there a co-sponsor? Someone in the family who is talking to her about their worries that they would have to pay for you if you do not work?

I confess, I'm going to feel waaay better and less stressed when I get the first offer and can relax - there's a world of difference in having skills and experience and having that real offer in your hand...maybe she feels the same way.

So I'd go for the interview, be totally honest about your situation, and if turned down ask if they would have employed you if you could start now.

She may just want you to do something.

Volunteer, show her that yes you cannot work but you can do something else.

There may not be money involved but you are very likely to make contacts & you could work there once you are allowed to.

I have been applying for jobs just to get my resume out. I have my SSC but not my EAD. I have only been here for just over a month and my fiancé keeps pressuring me to apply for jobs. No matter how much I tell her it does't make sense, she keeps doing it. Now I have two interviews that I know would not make sense attending since I have no authorization to work. What should I do at the interview? I know tell the truth but we are getting married next month and the process for approval of the EAD is approximately 90 days. I need help, seriously.:cry::cry::cry::cry:

Doing this now doens't make much sense but once you are married and have applied to adjust your status and get Biometrics done you can actually ask for your EAD to be Expedited if you get a Job Offer...

I think that it might be something like this.

Perhaps volunteering, working on resume skills (depending on what your field is), and doing all the stuff around the house will show that you want to contribute a fair share to the household.

the OP hasn't even gotten married. That could mean 5 months until she can work. First thing first. Get married.

Go to the interviews, ask when they want someone in place and then negotiate from there. Get as far as you can in the interview process.

Get your AOS package ready so that all you are waiting for is your marriage certificate. Check with the place where you are getting married and see if you can get a same-day or next day certified marriage certificate. Once you receive your marriage certificate, send your AOS package and request an expedite on the EAD. Include written confirmation of any job offers you have to support the expedite.

Technically, there is nothing to stop you from going to interviews and getting job offers. You just can't start working until you have your EAD.

After you've confirmed that it's not an issue regarding money, I would tell your fiancee that you love her, but you need her to back off: you want to do this the legal way and you don't want to jeopardise your immigration process.

Thanks, I told her that but I still don't think she fully understands the way this entire thing is set up. She even asked why didn't I apply for EAD when I got here, I directed her to the guides and showed her the processing times and it would be a waste of money to do that and still have to renew when we file for AOS. I'm going to attend the interview in good faith and see what takes place. It might seem like a waste of time but being out of the job market for over 5 years, the interview skills can be rusty. So I see this as an opportunity to sharpen my interview skills.

Good for you. Have you spoken to your fiancee about her concerns and why she's pressuring you to go to interviews? I can understand if money is getting tight, but you don't want to mess up your immigration process by working illegally. She'll just have to be patient if she wants you to do this the right way.
