90 days unemployment on OPT

Those on OPT can have no more than 90 days of unemployment.

However, university instructors, professors, etc., are on 9 month contracts. How will summers off be affected?

Also, some university instructors, professors, etc., may only get a contract for the Fall semester, with employment contract ending Dec 15th or so. Then they may get a new contract for Spring semester starting Jan 15th or so. Right away, they will be unemployed for 30 days.

And they are restricted to only having employment which needs masters in their field or maybe PhD in their field; so they can't just work at Walmart over the Christmas season.

Yes, they can do volunteer unpaid work; but again in must be in their field. Not much teacher volunteer work can be done over Christmas break, because no students will want to do academic work at that time.

Wondering if this 'gap period' has some exception so it doesn't count toward the 90 days of unemployment.

opt is a f-1 student visa. these professors are not students. they are on h1b or some special visa where there is no visa limit, mostly categorized as non-profit organization where there are exceptions.

Not true.

Students on F-1 visa are eligible for OPT after completion of any degree including bachelors, masters and PhD.

Several persons annually complete masters degree, get OPT and teach at high schools, community colleges, even some universities, etc.

Several persons annually complete PhD degree, get OPT and teach at colleges and universities as instructors and assistant professors.

True, many PhDs do go the H1b route, but they are fully eligible for the OPT route for 12 months with 17 month extension for those in STEM fields.

I would suggest vetting a job that meets OPT requirement's in the first place. If a job only offers 9 months then yes you would either accept it or look elsewhere.

Or consider a tutoring job whilst waiting those 3 months. Many teachers tutor during the summer.

Depending on the teacher's location, there' should be some things going on over the summer. For example where I am there is a reading program for kids every summer. The facility always needs instructors. Google is your friend.

No. Ask for a summer class or find another solution (i.e. travel or going back to regular F-1 to take a class. . . applying for B-1. . .). You need to stay in status. Talk to your international student office. . .they should be able to help.
