Marriage in US on work visa?

Hi everyone,

Not sure if this should go in family or work, so feel free to redirect me. I'm wondering if it is acceptable to get married on a work visa, and whether that will cause any problems for future immigration/migration issues?

I am a US citizen and my partner is EU. We have been together for a couple of years and met when partner was here on a student visa, and been together (minus a few months overseas) ever since. We are planning to get married, and partner is now in US on a work visa. Will any future applications for green card, tourist visa, etc. be affected if we marry while under work visa? Partner does NOT plan to request for change of visa status and we will be moving to the EU in a year or so, with no future plans for green card in the US.

p.s.: If we marry under tourist visa, will partner's renewal of work visa be affected next year?

You do not have to be under any visa to marry in the US.

As Boiler said, marrying in US is entirely legal on any visa, coming to US on any non-immigrant visa with intent to marry is also entirely legal.

What's not is using non-immigrant visa to immigrate - which you don't plant to do - however two most common work visas (H-1B and L-1) are dual intent so even coming to US on those with intent to immigrate is not a fraud.

Also, if you don't want to adjust and just want to stay in your work visa status, that's perfectly fine. Being married doesn't automatically cancel your work visa or anything!
