When should I?

Hello folks,

I am new to this great forum and wealth of information here, and it is nice to finally join! I have 2 questions, I am a US citizen that wants to go and visit my girlfriend who lives in Vietnam at the end of May or first part of June 2015. How soon or how far in advance should I apply for a tourist visa to Vietnam? The reason why I will not be able to travel until next summer is because I do not have the vacation or sick time available to me to take off from my job to travel. Financially I am good to go.

My girfriend and I have also discussed the possiblity of her coming to visit me here in the US since I am not able to travel anytime soon. My girlfriend tells me that it would be very difficult for her to obtain a visa to come visit me here in the US because the Vietnamese goverment requires that a visa applicant with intentions on traveling to the US must have a certain amount of money in their bank account when they file for a tourist visa to the US. Is this true or not?

I would like to know if anyone has heard such a thing or if what she is saying is true? My girlfriend and I met online back in May of this year, we both have a whole bunch in common, we get along great, and I think she would be a great wife. This is my first online relationship so I am still trying to figure out how the immigration stuff works.

Vietnamese Government has no involvement in US Visa.

If the implication is that you need to send her money then that is a classic scam.

That's common misunderstanding of Viet people. They misunderstand a bank statement to show they have ties with Vietnam financially WITH a big lum sum of money to give to US embassy in exchange of the visa (which will be refunded when they return from trip, yep they REALLY think that.)

She only needs to prove that she has enough money to support herself on her own during the vacation and that she has big reasons to go back home afterwards. You writing a letter saying you'd support her won't make a difference as they want to see she's the one who can afford the trip...the whole reason my husband had his B-2 denied the first attempt.

First off, the Vietnamese government has nothing to do with awarding her a visa. However, the US Embassy in Vietnam may wish to see she has enough money to support herself on a trip to the USA.

Secondly, as this is your first online dating experience, a word of caution: If she starts asking you for money for plane fees and visa fees, etc., DO NOT give her money. Initially offer to pay for the ticket and visa yourself. If she accepts, most likely she is the real deal; if she insists on "doing it herself" with your money, it's a scam, drop her and move onward.

NancyNguyen is correct. My wife thought the same thing. She insisted she needed $10K in a bank account to give to the US embassy for the visa which would be refunded later. I argued with her for hours on this that it was a myth. She didn't believe me until she got issued a tourist visa for the $160 fee and never had to show any financial documents. She can apply for a tourist visa right now.

You don't need the tourist visa to travel to Vietnam. Vietnam has a sort of visa on arrival program. You use an online travel company (I used vietnamvisapro). You apply for a letter of invitation to travel to Vietnam. A day or two later you get the letter and you can travel. Once at the airport in Vietnam you apply for the visa before passing border control. Just google Vietnam visa on arrival and you'll find tons of instructions for doing this.

This is also cheaper that apply for a visa at the Vietnam embassy in the US and a lot faster.
