Hi everyone. I have a question regarding my ssn and green card. I arrived in the US June 2014 with 1r1 visa category. But until now I haven't received my green card because we changed our address and as per uscis it was sent to my old address. But what I'm worried about is when I tried to apply for an ssn the ssa office sent me a notice that they can't process my application since DHS can't verify my visa status. What does it mean? I'm so confused and need some advice. Please help me what to do ,Thank you so much in advance

How soon did you apply for the SSN after you entered? I think it takes like 2 weeks or something for you to show up in the system they use.

If you went in right away they would have to do manual verification which can take weeks, which looks like they didn't. You can try going again and apply once more since you should be in their system by now.

Also the GC can take up to 3 months sometimes, but it looks like yours was sent to your old address. Why didn't you update your address with USCIS?

I have been waiting my Ssn almost a month but nothing came in yet so i decided to apply for my Ssn to ssa office after a month I received there notice that they can't issue my Ssn yet of because need to verify in USCIS of my status

And also I changed address just last August Then last July 11 they delivered my green card to my old address that's my mother in law house address the problem is there no people in the house coz they are at work , so they returned my green card it says need to signature to recieved but no people in the house yet I'm just wondered why they didnt put in the mailbox so that my in laws can give it to me even if we living in different city but the same state of michigan

My husband and I we are always follow up last August the officer of uscis we talked and they gave the track number online where my green card are, when I track is forward to Texas and just wondering why it was there in Texas that I am here in Michigan and the sept we follow up again and said they were deliver my gc within in 3 weeks but it's already October now nothing came in yet :-( so we need to call again what happened

So I can go there in SSA office again when I have a green card in hand hopefully am praying always !!!!!

And yes that's what I knew that it would be in the system I'm just wondering why ,,

Here it says from SSA notice I recieved from the mail .

We cannot issue you a social security card at this time because:

The department of homeland security is unable to verify the immigrant document you submitted as eve dunce of your lawful alien status . You should contact that agency to clarify your current immigration status .

The situation about the SSN is probably because you applied too early after entry. Your visa with the stamp serves as proof of your immigration status so it should be sufficient to process your application at this point.

I'm not sure, but I think they verify all of this electronically, so if you aren't in their system, they will deny the application. Therefore, you should be able to go again and this time it should be ok.

My cousin's husband waited a month to apply because they were waiting for it to come automatically and it never did. He went in with his visa and stamp and had no issues. GC was received like 2 months later.

As for the delivery of the GC, usually they leave a notice and you have a certain amount of time to pick up at the post office before they return to sender.

Yes i waiting too in a month for my Ssn but not came in yet I arrived June this year since I been waiting for my Ssn and not came in yet last August husband and I decided to go in SSA office after 2 months I recieved the notice of SSA mail to me that I recieved it oct 1st ,, :-( I'm so much worried and yeah my passport visa when I was POE it says

Upon endorsement serves at temporary I-551 evidencing permanent residence for 1 year!!

So on Monday we will call again to verify I to the USCIS when my husband back home from work coz he always in the road all the time !!!

And yeah that time we went to the SSA office I just brought my passport and visa with no issues so after two months of waiting that's the notice I recieved I thought it's my SSn card but not yet huhuhu

Ok, I see. It sounds strange that they weren't able to verify you if you went to the SSA more than a month after POE. It's possible that they put something down incorrectly like your name or A number when they tried to verify you in their system.

I would go to the office again and apply again. If they give you a hard time, ask to speak to a supervisor. They cannot deny you the right to apply for an SSN because the docs that you have are perfectly valid.

Bring the letter you received and tell them that you need an SSN in order to work and that you are duly qualified to receive it. They CANNOT request that you wait for your GC since your visa and stamp serves as a temporary GC for all intents and purposes.

Sometimes you have to be really firm with these people. I have dealt with the SSA various times for my personal things as well as other's I've helped and I have to argue every time because their employees most of the time just don't know any better. The same old thing with the DMV.

I had the similar problem.

I fixed it by engaging an immigration liason staffer at my congressman's office, they got the card reshipped to the proper address.

as to SSN - that's cr@p - must be a typo somewhere in the SAVE database system - go back to SSA again, ask for lookup via A# and then VISA name, noting which has the typo.

If typo is blatant, must go to CBP office and get it fixed, then go back to SSA office a week later.

your legal presence is stored in SAVE database, searchable by A# and VISA Name... The greencard in hand does not matter.

I agree. Their system must have a typo somewhere. What's even more annoying is that the documents don't seem to have any value if the electronic system doesn't confirm.

One small caveat. Ask for lookup in save database by A# and then again by VISA name.

Do that first, when giving over the application. If the person seems confused, ask for supervisor. It's really important they find you in the SAVE database first. If no find, you MUST get back to CBP and correct your POE record - as it was messed up by CBP.... No use to call about it - just go to CBP.
