3,000 Ebola victims dead; US to send 3, 000 troops to Africa

3,000 have died from Ebola. And we're sending 3,000 soldiers over to assist. Coincidence.

I don't see this ending well. But I hope for their sake everything goes well for these soldiers. Even doctors and nurses are getting infected, and they surely have better PPE than the soldiers will.

About 1,400 soldiers will head to Liberia in October to help support the fight against the Ebola virus that is spreading across West Africa, a Pentagon official said Tuesday.

The Armys 101st Airborne Division, based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, will provide about 700 of those soldiers, while the other 700 will be mostly combat engineers culled from Army units across the force, Defense Department spokesman Rear Adm. John Kirby told reporters.

The soldiers will be among the total of 3,000 U.S. troops whom the Pentagon plans to send into West Africa this fall.

It would be, if the military were trained to combat deadly infectious disease. Seems to me a better job for the good folks of the CDC as opposed to soldiers, sailors, and marines.

This is what the US should be using it's armed forces for overseas, rather than using them to fight dubious wars for dubious agendas.

Humanitarian relief over combat, sure, I'm all for that. But to deal with a deadly virus outbreak? Scary stuff. Then again, they're cheap and expendable labor, right? With no ability to say no to the mission, regardless of their feelings about it.

What tune is that?

Helping in a humanitarian function is morally right.

Charging around the middle East like a bull in a China shop, heedless and indifferent to the carnage and chaos you cause, is really not.

A coupla weeks ago, you were saying that military folks should be able to opt out of missions (when we were talking about war) if they don't want to go.

Now it's just their place to do as they're told. Even though the risk of death is as high or perhaps higher than war.
