Foreign income before entering and after EAD

I assume I need to tell them about income I've made this year before entering the USA as a K-1.

I assume I won't be taxed on that. Also if I get paid a foreign salary through my own business in the UK (paid to a UK bank account), after I get EAD how does this go for tax purposes? What USA taxes will I pay? Would I pay Self Employment Tax in the USA?

If you file a joint tax return, all income earned in 2014 must be reported. You can get a foreign income exclusion that takes off the tax your foreign income created. It's complicated so not going into detail, but you will report if you want to file jointly and you will get a break on the foreign income before POE.

The next part...foreign income on a continuing basis after being resident in the US...

The foreign income exclusion is over.

Generally you pay tax in the country where you live. There is a tax treaty with the UK. You pay US and not UK. Ther's a form for HMRC (Inland Revenue?) to get out of UK taxes.

As a small business, yes you pay self-employment tax calculated on Schedule SE. That is basically your contribution to Social Security and Medicare because you don't have an employer taking it out of your check. Actually an employer pays some and employee pays some. As self employed you are charged all of it. but some is deducted off your tax return on Line 27 to help you out and reduce your gross income. And business expenses have deductions on Schedule C, so not every penny you take in is taxed.

So that's a very general summary, but taxes are complicated by lots of "if this...then that" scenarios and are very specific to the individual. Once you find your spot by wading through mountains of instructions and publications, I find them pretty easy. I actually get the whole publication booklet (or print it) and start reading. If it applies to my situation, I highlight it. If it has pages and pages about something that doesn't apply, I draw a line diagonally through the page so I don't bother when I go back to read again. That's just my way of learning...marking pages instead of reading a screen. After the first time filing, it's easier.

Or some people pay accountants.
