This question really can't be answered. It takes time for the embassy to send the petition to NVC. NVC then sends it to USCIS for review. USCIS can take months to review the case.

After the petition is reviewed you or your lawyer will receive a Notice Of Intent to Revoke which will tell you all the reasons the visa was denied. You will then have only 30 days to send in proof why your petition should be reaffirmed and sent back to the embassy for another interview.

If you have any idea of why your case was sent back you can interview lawyers and pick one based on their knowledge and maybe price. I already had a lawyer who handled my whole visa petition from start to finish so USCIS sent the Notice of Intent to Revoke to her and she contacted me ASAP.

While you are waiting, see if there are low cost agencies that help with immigration cases. I used a lawyer from ,Catholic Charities and the fee was based on income. Do a google search of low cost immigration lawyers in your area. My lawyer was a 45 minute drive away but well worth the drive with all the money I saved. You will only have 30 days to respond so even if you don't hire a lawyer right now it will be good to know what lawyer you will be using when the time comes.

You can hire a lawyer whenever you want, they cannot tell you when you're allowed to hire someone or not.
