More good news coming up

  • AILA liaison reportedly asked Mr. Oppenheim of DOS the potential impact of such reform on immigration visa cut-off dates and his answer was that it would accelerate cut-offs but cut-offs would still exist in the family-based peference immigrant visa categories, while such fix would result in all of EB visa categories immediately becoming current and continuously remaining current for the foreseeable future. But within a year of two, filing and approval of new petitions could require cut-off dates for some preferences for some countries. Interesting.................................................''

I guess if the immigration reforms accelerates cut-offs for family-based preference categories we can still celebrate

But my question is specifically when will the reform be effected

Here's the latest..

After November.. I guess

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2014/08/30/obama-under-pressure-to-delay-immigration-action-until-after-midterms/

President Obama is reportedly mulling the possibility of delaying making changes to U.S. immigration policy until after the upcoming midterm elections, after Democrats in tough Senate races have argued that it could damage their chances in November.

The president had been expected to use his executive authority to ease deportations and give temporary work permits to millions of illegal immigrants.

After Republicans in the House of Representatives voted down a version of immigration reform, Obama announced that he intended to act on his own before the end of summer in order to make what he said were urgent changes to the immigration system. Republicans claim that such moves would exceed his legal authority if he were to act without congressional approval.

However, The Wall Street Journal reports that White House officials are now debating whether to put off some or all of Obamas policy changes until after the November election, after several Democrats running in tight elections in conservative states have urged the president to do so, claiming that such a move would damage their election prospects.

Democratic Senators Mark Pryor in Arkansas, Kay Hagan in North Carolina, Mark Begich in Alaska and Jeanne Shaheen in New Hampshire, all have called for immigration reform to be addressed by Congress, not by the White House, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Obama said in a news conference Thursday that his timeline for immigration reform was unclear, and said that the child-migration crisis could affect the timing of any announcement.

"Some of these things do affect timelines, and we're just going to be working through as systematically as possible in order to get this done," Obama said.

Obama also faces pressure from immigrant-rights advocates strongly urging the president not to back down and to move forward as planned, especially as he has already delayed action once in 2014.

However, Brad Dayspring, spokesman for the National Republican Senatorial Committee, said Mr. Obama's executive action on immigration would be unpopular no matter when he made it.

"Whether President Obama declares executive amnesty in September, October or November, he has neither the legal authority nor the public support to do it," Dayspring told The Wall Street Journal.

Obama being as inconsistence in his response to ISIS as he is with immigration reform. He brags all over the place acting alone stirring hope among millions of legal and illegal immigrants and then cools off everybody because he wants to make sure Democrats retain control of the Senate. I guess it all boils down to politics and that's all. Nobody among US politicians, including the president, care about the suffering of immigrants!

Sounds promising but Obama doesn't seem to really know what to do with many issues lately. Immigration reform, ISIS, retain Senate....

Here's the latest...

NEWPORT Wales/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama said on Friday he will soon announce how he will address U.S. immigration reform, but sidestepped questions about whether he would wait until after November's midterm elections to take action.

Obama said his plan would include more enforcement for illegal immigration and steps to encourage legal immigration, and would address the politically contentious question of how to deal fairly with millions of undocumented people who have lived in the United States for years.

Obama has made it clear he wants to do what he can to improve the immigration system after Congress failed to agree on a package of reforms to fix long-standing issues.

Polls show Americans are concerned about the impact of undocumented immigrants on the country, and Democrats nervous about keeping control of the Senate have urged the White House to hold off on changes until after the elections.

In June, Obama promised to announce his decision by the end of summer. But last week, he signaled the timeline was in question.

Speaking at a NATO summit in Wales, Obama said he has received some recommendations from Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson and Attorney General Eric Holder on his options.

"I suspect that on my flight back, this will be part of my reading, taking a look at some of the specifics that we've looked at, and I'll be making an announcement soon," Obama told reporters at a news conference.

"In the absence of congressional action, I intend to take action, to make sure that we're putting more resources on the border, that we're upgrading how we process these cases, and that we find a way to encourage legal immigration," Obama said.

He also said he wanted to give undocumented immigrants who have been living in America for years "some path so they can start paying taxes, pay a fine and learn English, and be able to not look over their shoulder but be legal since they've been living here for quite some time."

The prospect of delays has upset the Hispanic community, which wants to see measures that remove the fear of deportation for many of the nation's 11 million undocumented immigrants.

"No more word games," Cesar Vargas of the DREAM Action Coalition, a group representing Latino youth, said in a statement.

But Bruce Morrison, a former Democratic congressman who was an author of the 1990 Immigration Act, said it was more important that Obama get the policy right rather than rush ahead with changes that could be quickly overturned by Congress.

"Political judgments here are more than just electoral judgments. They're judgments about getting something done that will actually stay done," he said in an interview.

Morrison, now an immigration lobbyist, said Obama's package should include measures to clear out backlogs in the legal immigration system, and an enforcement plan for illegal migrants.

The government has been grappling with an unexpected surge of nearly 63,000 children who have come across the southwestern border from Central American since October 2013.

"He needs to connect the dots and say, 'I'm preventing future kids-on-the-border incidents by the way in which I'm doing this administrative action," Morrison said.
