Birth certificate for interview - Must be original?

Hey everyone!

Our interview is scheduled for August 27th and we're putting the checklist (and extras) together. I was wondering, how strict are they about original documents? My husband's original birth certificate is on the East Coast in his parents' safe deposit box. They sent us a scanned copy of it via email, which we can just print out and bring. They are somewhat reluctant to send the original document by mail (we'd do FedEx for sure, so it's not a big deal, just costs $$)

Would it be a big risk to show up with the printed copy and explain the situation? Or must it be the original? He has his passport here, and we're obviously going to bring EVERYTHING we have.

You can get another authorized birth certificate from the issuing state. We did that for my birth certificate that was orignally issued in Massachusetts.

You can do this and at least in NY if it's the short version you get it the same day for less than $20.

Thanks for the replies! So what I'm getting from this is, we should go ahead and have his parents FedEx the original over. The additional certified copy would be for the worst case scenario of it getting lost. Which I doubt will happen. BTW, the issuing state is DC and we're in California.

Gurken Salat please check out this site for DC http://doh.dc.gov/service/birth-certificates You can do online requests through a service that is provided on the website.

What they are asking for is an official certified copy. Sometimes "original" birth certificates are really not certified copies. I was born in the 1962 what my parents received was not a certified copy but a simple copy from the doctor's office of his record of live birth and a fancier card type with a seal from the hospital. Neither of these qualifies as an original certified copy from the state. You can order as many of these as you want. Just make sure you have enough for the numerous occasions you will be asked for them.

The kindness we give to others may never be recognized by the ugly souls we encounter in the vast jungle of humanity, but what we give will echo brilliantly in the smiles of those who have received it.

Thanks, that is really helpful! We'll make sure we have the right kind of copy. As far as I know, USCIS won't just keep it, they will make a copy and return whatever documents we bring to the interview.
