Just a few questions regarding work and applying for work.

I have arrived to the US on K1 got married.

I have applied AOS/Travel Docs/Employment Authorization.

My Bio-metric appointment is on the 4th August.

I have started to look for causally looking for work, updating Linkedin Profile, Monster, etc, etc.

I have also applied I have stated that my working authorization is pending.

Just wanted to confirm that is ok, also my father in law has mentioned to my wife about me work off the books.

Which I have refused to do.

Any advise in what I can and cannot do at this time?

You can apply for work now. You just can't work until your permission is approved. If you got a job offer now, it might be hard to find an employer willing to wait a few months for you to start working. Good luck.

No one is going to easily encourage you to work of the book (cheating) on open forum.

Personally, I discourage it, but is it being done? I'm sure there are tons and tons that are doing it.

While you are waiting for your work permit, are there any job skill improvements you can do?

Local colleges provide many continuing education classes. And if you take them at local

community college, it should be very cheap and you'll improve your skills.

Agreed I not seeking encouragement in anything shady or illegal. I refuse to do it despite her father or anyone else's opinion.

I did look at community college but they wanted people who her resident for a year more.

But I am keeping myself busy and building a contact list for when I can find work.

Also, I don't know what field you are in, but Internet, YouTube, and Google search

offers you so many free training/education.

You might still be able to spend quality time improving your skills without going to school

for few months while waiting for the work permit.

No I already have a career resumé I meant is it really allowed to cite self-taught subjects on a professional resumé/CV when there is no formal certification or transcript? I wouldn't have thought so

Oh sorry for misunderstanding...

If its something that you learned on your own and if its not significant,

it wouldn't be appropriate to include them in the resume...I would think.

However, if you had to learn some skills to do you job, and you actually

applied it and built some experience with it, then its perfectly legit to include them.

I'm in IT (Software Development/Project Management), and new technologies are

coming out so fast that 90% of the time, we have to learn it on the job by researching

and just doing it. So for us, often, the new skills are (subtly) merged into the job description

that we performed (without specifically specifying it...because the reader will know

that you had to have that skill to do that job).

Also, in US, a cover letter is usually attached along with the resume.

And in that cover letter, you can also describe those newly learned skills

that you hadn't applied to actual work, but some amount of valuable

proficiency has been established. But you only add this, if this is relevant

to the position that you are applying for.

That said, a smart way to manage resume is to have a base with complete

information, but make a copy and tailor it to best fit the job you are applying for.

For example, if you are applying for a manager position, then you accentuate

managerial skills vs. if you are applying for a staff position, then you adjust it

to accentuate more hands on skills.

I don't think anything learned on youtube would be worth a line on your resume, but it might help get your head in the game, as it were.

Generally, self-taught things can be on the resume, if they are relevant. For instance, a lot of people put their computer skills on a resume, and I doubt people have diplomas for using Microsoft Office or Photoshop.

OP: If you do get a job offer, some people have been successful in expediting the EAD based on a pending employment offer. No guarantees, but possible. Good luck.
