Has anyone used a degree equivalency tool or specific company to get credit for a degree? If so which company did you use? How long did it take? If you did not use a company how did you get credit for your degree?

Depending on what you plan on doing it will make a difference what path you will follow. Countries known for forgeries have a harder time getting a degree recognized without using an evaluation company

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

What do you mean get credit?

That is highly dependent on the school (or employer) that you apply to,

and also which school (and country) you went to.

Even within US, certain credits are not accepted by other schools.

My son just transferred this fall from university to another

and one school accepted all of his credit hours, and the other only accepted 1/2.

You can try to go through sites like this to get somewhat "neutral" party evaluation

of you degree. http://www.wes.org/index.asp

My spouse is completing school in Nigeria we hope to get full credit for the degree in order to professionally practice in the U.S. and obtain license for my spouse's particular field of work. We have considered http://www.wes.org/index.asp but would like second opinions.

It depends on the field. You can google at check the US license requirements.

But keep in mind that, US schools and various professional license boards

know which countries and schools are credible and which are questionable.

Not to be mean, but Nigeria is widely known for many frauds to US folks,

and there's been number of TV coverage on some of those fraud activities.

No matter, which web site you go through to certify,

the school or the license board will make their own assessment.

I think the best thing to do is look up the US license board and

their requirements, and contact them to get more specifics.

Each place tends to have their favorite place to have degrees translated. You may pay for WES and find the company/school you are talking to wants a different place. It is best to ask directly rather than pay for something you have to re pay for.

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

Thanks everyone we will take all into consideration. Thank goodness the university my spouse attends has full accreditation. Hopefully this will make things a little easier.

Hi, I have just had my foreign degree evaluation done. I am super happy - what a relief!

My advice: find out which company YOU should use for your evaluation. It will depend on what you need your report for. Universities have their preferences when it comes to who prepared your report. Some universities have evaluators working for them and may count your credits all by themselves. If you're going for a license, find out from the licensing board whose report they accept. Good luck!

P.S. When they say originals, they mean originals :)

Good luck!

I work in the Office of Admissions for a state university. While schools may differ, to give you an idea: first thing our International dept. looks at is School Accreditation. We recommend/prefer WES evaluations so I can second the recommendation for them as a reputable evaluation service.

I've heard it can be expensive but I've seen WES evaluations before and they are very professional.
