Hello. I arrived last week and am going to start working on the AOS package pretty soon. I have two questions which I'm not entirely sure of the answers so was looking for some help.

1) SSN. I had a J1 visa in 2010 and still have my social security card from back then. I obviously know I can't work on it right now, but do I have to apply for one before I get married? I see a lot of posts with people applying for a SSN soon after they arrive and then updating the card to their married name later, but I'm thinking I am fine with my old number and can just update it with my married name after the wedding? Its true that you're only ever assigned one SSN in your life right? So I wouldn't need to do anything just yet?

2) I'm aiming to have the entire AOS package ready to submit prior to our wedding in June. Am I right in thinking that as soon as I get a copy of the marriage certificate then I can pop it in the envelope and send it out the next day? I'm eager to start working right away. Or would I have to wait a little while and provide pictures of the marriage ceremony and stuff like joint bills and leases etc? I thought proof like joint bills and photos is only required at the interview but I don't wanna mess up the package if it turns out that I need to send that stuff in with the forms?

Thanks for any help in advance :)

1 - You will not need to apply for a SSN. The number you have is yours for life.

2 - Just make sure you sign and date the AOS forms AFTER you receive the certified copy of marriage. The issue is obviously not with the signature, so much as the date can' t be earlier than the date you have your certified copy on hand.

If you are eager to start working, apply for EAD and AP at the same time, in one go. You should have your EAD - temporary work permit - in 3-4 months. You need not wait to gather more evidence. After all, your visa was issue on the condition that you get married once stateside - don't worry.

Having said that, if you get married at city hall, ask the office whether expediting the certified copy is a possibility. You never know when kindness may strike...

Ah thank you for the info! I will make sure the date is the day after and I emailed the courthouse who said we are issued the certified copy on the day and can then have additional ones printed there and then for $3 each.

Btw, love the winking dog on your profile picture :)

That is good news. In some states it may take up to three weeks to get the certified copy. Incidentally, do spend the $3 and get an additional copy, for nothing you submit to the USCIS will be returned to you.

ps - The winking dog's name is Ventura. She is quite the charmer and the sweetest dog on Earth...

Wow three weeks would be such a pain! I was planning on getting an extra 2 copies, so we can frame one and then we have one spare so that if I need to prove my identity for whatever reason (probs being paranoid but I like to be prepared!)

Ventura is a cutie, give her a treat from me :)

Yeah i waited until after I got married to update my SS# with my married name, its no problem. I did it in person with my marriage certificate and I had also already received from EAD. It took a week to receive the new SS card in the mail.

Note: you have to have your SS# and your EAD in the same name (i.e. they have to match) if you need both to get your Drivers License as I did here in Texas.
