Durian tastes good when I can get past the smell. I've only done that so far with durian imported to the USA so far. Next time in Phils will be my big test if I've learned to get past the smell though. As it is, I can tell when we're within a mile of the durian market in Davao City.

They say it tastes like heaven and smells like hell. I remember the Marco Polo hotel in Davao frisking me before entering to make sure I didn't have any weapons or Durian unsure.png

The Marco Polo is just a wind shift from smelling like Durian.

I am lucky no one grows durian near us. There are some trees on the north shore on a farm away from people. Also it seems the Ilocanos don't like durian that much. If they did, then it would be on every Filipinos's yard like malungay bitter melon. Besides the OP will live in the bay area, she will need not worry about getting Filipino food.

Durian, no matter the source - Phil, Thai, Chinese....fresh, frozen, ice cream, pastry...no problema, quite delicious.yes.gif

Balut, sorry I cannot ingest enough San Miguel before attempting to eat balutdead.gif (again...lol laughing.gif )....

YMMV

Your problem is you need to switch to Red Horse. Two before and one after. Then balut is no problem, haha.

I really don't see what most people's problem is with balut. Other than initial appearance, there is nothing wrong with it. Not saying I would eat them for breakfast but if Westerners eat fried eggs in the morning and fried chicken in the evening, then why not the boiled inbetween before going to bed? What other food comes with built in toothpicks? Also if you get balut sa puti (sp?) it comes with less meat, haha.

This really is an interesting thread and I hope it lives for several more days.

But back to OP question.... If an individual can't bring Magic Sarap in, then why can I buy it at a local Phil market, albeit at extremely inflated prices compared to in the PI? That I don't understand.

Also what incoming customs inspection is usually done? I re-entered the US 3 times recently with planeloads of Chinese, Japanese, Filipino passengers. Seems like most of them are traveling with enormous suitcases you would have to stand on to get closed and balikbayan sized boxes that are fully taped and tied with ropes to prevent bursting open. Does customs really want those cracked open? There is no way they could be re-sealed for onward travel or is it just the luck of the draw what cbp agent you get and their attitude that moment?

So do they open ALL balikbayan boxes, random, or only if you look suspicious? Guess it would be worthwhile to take a roll of carton sealing tape in carryon just in case, correct?

An odd question considering the title of this thread, unless you're keen on eating your acne cream.

Importing drugs not approved by FDA is illegal.

However, CBP will allow you to bring in personal quantities of a medication you are taking, generally considered to be up to a 90 day supply, as long as it is in its original container and accompanied by a prescription.

Would be advisable to obtain another prescription.

Magic Sarap contains chicken, chicken is not allowed. You can bring personal amounts of dried fish though. Bagoong can be brought, but its pretty easy to buy in the USA and you don't want it getting broken in your bags!

Animal Products and Animal By-Products:

Meat, milk, egg, poultry, and their products, including products made with these materials, such as dried soup mix or bouillon, are either prohibited or restricted from entering the United States, depending on the types of animal diseases which occur in the country of origin. Fresh (chilled or frozen), dried, cured, and fully cooked meat is generally prohibited from most countries. Canned meat is allowed entry, except beef, veal, lamb, mutton, venison, elk, bison, etc., from countries affected by bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE).

Products containing raw egg ingredients are prohibited from most regions.

Eggs and egg products from Exotic Newcastle Disease (END) and Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) affected regions, including cooked eggs, if not accompanied by a USDA Veterinary Service import permit remain prohibited regardless if those items are for personal consumption. Effective February 15, 2012, travelers may once again bring fully cooked eggs from Mexico into the U.S.

Pork should be commercially canned and labeled in unopened containers. Pork and pork products are not admissible from Mexico, except for cooked pork in small amounts for a meal.

Effective January 14, 2010, cooked pork skins (also known as pork rind) entering as commercial cargo or in passenger baggage from regions affected with foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), swine vesicular disease (SVD), African swine fever (ASF), or classical swine fever (CSF) must be accompanied by an original certificate issued by an official of the National Government of the region of origin.

It might be banned to bring in via your flight but you can order it online at Amazon!

OP, you're going to California. You don't have to bring all those things. You can easily find it there. Spare yourself the trouble of worrying if what you brought will be confiscated by customs.
