yeah it depends on your work experience, education level and what field you are in. and also the industries that are in your state.

Well, I would persist with Brinks if you can. Did you go down there and apply in person and talk to people there? Try and try again. It is much better if you can personally get to know them and explain your experience. You might also try applying for bank clerk positions if you think that is something you can do. Really it is a matter of being very persistent and not taking 'no' for an answer.

It is possible that they will want U.S. work experience. In that case, you might have to apply through temporary agencies or work at a more basic labor type of job that requires no experience. This is the tricky part.

My husband spent many months at horrible jobs, temp jobs like packing, assembling mirrors, and so forth with horrible hours and very low pay. Finally he got a type of work-training in the auto industry and he has been working for almost a year in the auto die industry. Not a great job for him, as he is trained as a teacher, but he is applying for an apprenticeship in another type of position there. One step at a time. At least he is building experience here and showing his excellent work ethic. His employers are very impressed with him and this will help a lot when he needs references for future jobs.

There are a lot of details that go into getting a job. What are your interview skills like? Do you have a good grasp on the cultural aspects that go into said interview? Also, do you put on your resume that you have a green card? My husband did this and he got a job in two months. Some employers are wary of hiring illegal immigrants and they could be making assumptions based on your name. He entered the country on Dec 11 we married on jan 30th he received his GC on may 23 and was employed on july 20th. So it took him about 7 months from entering the country to get a job but he's also in sales and this is a pretty easy industry to get a job in.

also i checked brink's website and it says you have to be able to pass firearms licensing and i'm not sure of the rules if an LPR can handle a gun. but i've never touched a gun so i don't know the rules.

It took my husband 5 months to get his first job and it was a crappy one. He sent literally hundreds and hundreds of resumes and no one was willing to hire him in his field with no US experience, so he took a job at Walmart that was a nightmare. After 10 months and sending hundreds more resumes he got an internship position in his field. After 4 months they hired him full time with a great salary and benefits. So total of 14 months from when he entered the US until he got his dream job, which he loves. He is a computer engineer.

My suggestion is to make sure your resume is up to US standards and go to careerbuilder.com, dice.com, monster.com, set up accounts on those sites and upload your resume. Apply for jobs in your field and also set up a profile on LinkedIn.com with your resume and other details. Hang in there, it takes time. The economy is still rough, even for US citizens educated here with work experience here. Good luck!

While trying to work in the field of your degree , as Goldengate said your best bet would be to get started is to go to a temp agency. It's the way my husband found his job and most of the other immigrants he met also had their start that way. It's tough out there!

It took me about 5-6 months and my first job sucked! I went from an office manager to housekeeper, then to a prep cook, then other jobs I hated. but, my employers became one of my best references. When I finally landed a good job - almost 1 yr after I moved, I found a job as a legal assistant. Those US references really help. Plus, a lot of jobs I applied for needed an AA or BA. I never had to go through that in Canada.

About two months. But this was after grad school here in the US and with references from my US professors and former bosses in Manila (worked as a journalist there). I think it's somewhat harder getting jobs without a US reference. You just need to be persistent. Once you secure at least one good US reference, things will get easier.

My hubby really impressed me by landing a job in only 2 weeks! But he does have former US work experience and the position he took is just min wage and he is definitely way over qualified.

But it's a step in the right direction. He will get excellent references out of this job and this will put him one step closer to landing his dream job.

His field is culinary and hospitality and he took a job as a prep cook at a diner style restaurant.

I think what worked in his favor was applying in person.

I am the petitioner.

Grats on him getting a job!

For us, it was less than 48 hours doing a job he had previously done in his home country, earning double minimum wage despite only having a 10th grade education.

still applying and nothing is there.
feel like this country is run by websites, cause that's all they say. Go to the web site and apply and when i do, his majesty "the website" says, i'm not qualified.

would like to find a job before i die.

any general labor (i'm not asking for mayor position).

Go in to the offices of some temp agencies that don't require any skills and apply directly. You may have to start at the basic level to just get experience. Applying through websites is hard, unless you can do some sort of labor job in the manufacturing industry. Apply to industries directly. Don't apply online. They get too many applications. Also look up any jobs that say they will train you. Try to get some job skills training for experience and future references.
