Hi people,

I entered the US in March 2012 and received my green card a month later. I left in June 2012 to go to Germany for the European football and haven't returned since. Didn't really like 'living' in LA, it's definitely seen better days. I now plan to stay in Europe but would like to travel as a tourist to USA. How do I "return" my green card so that i can apply for a tourist visa?

You can formally surrender your Green Card via form I-407 and apply for a B2 at the same time.

You didn't like living in L.A. I didn't like that either. You are aware that the United States is much larger than the greater Los Angeles area, do you?

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

You should surrender your green card at the US embassy in your home country. That should show you have no immigrant intent when you apply for the tourist visa.

Good luck!

You have to return back to USA within 1 year, if not then you abandon your residency. If you wanted to keep your GC valid then you have to file for I-131, Application for Travel Document, but you need to show a reason why you wanted to stay outside US for long time. If you decided to file and get approved then you will have GC valid while you will be in EU for 2 years. Also keep in mind that you need to be in the USA if decided to file for I-131, out side USA you cant file.

If just intested in vistor visa, then follow above mentioned posts for others..
