thank you everybody for the comments and suggestions. I was very worried previously that if she got denied a tourist visa, that it would make things very difficult in the future. I think we will give it a try, and see what happens. if she gets the visa, great! if she doesnt get it, at least we tried.

Thank you everybody for all of the help, it is greatly appreciated.

It's almost impossible for a single woman to get a tourist visa to the US, especially to visit her boyfriend. Add the fact that she's from a poor country and she has no ties (no job, no savings, no property), it's a 1 in a 100 kind of chance IMO.

Hi Guys, I thought I would follow up on how it went.

My girlfriend GOT the visa! I took all of your suggestions, and did nothing out of the ordinary like add some money to her account. She went to the Guangzhou consulate, and it took her about 1.5 hours to get everything finished (mostly just standing in line). She said that the interviewer spent a lot of time looking at her application on the computer, and just asked her a few questions. She also said that a lot of people in front of her were getting denied, so she was very nervous when it was her turn.

Thank you very much to all that encouraged me to get it. I knew it would be a 0% chance if I didnt try, but thank you especially to the people in this thread that offered encouraging words.

The only question I have left is, there is not much written on the visa as far as how long we are allowed to stay. It has the following info:

Valid from sept 11, 2012 - sept 9, 2013

multiple entry

I had read that the guy who stamps your passport upon entry ultimately decides how long you can stay, but I am a bit confused on how all of that is determined. Any help is greatly appreciated.

BTW, you can get a visa within 5 business days at the Guangzhou consulate... it was outrageously fast!

Filed: IR-1/CR-1 Visa Country: China
Timeline

how many days 'allowed to stay'

is determined at the Port of Entry into the USA.

she'll receive an I-94 with dates in it - pay attention to that.

The minimum is 30 days, some people get 90, some people get 180.
