hi everyone. i hope that you guys can help me understand on this topic. my wife came here in the united states in 2010 and were marry in the same year. in 2011, my wife got her ead card and her aos application was pending. anyway, she found a job at burgerking but they only gave her 2 days per week and only 4 hours each of the days. then they only gave her 1 day a week, 4 hours for the day. my wife got her w-2 taxes and found out that they didn't take out no federal taxes on her. they took the other taxes out but not the federal taxes. burgerking instead of giving out paycheckes, they give out money cards. each pay period, you call this 800 number and they will tell you how nuch you had made for the week. then you take the card to the bank, and then the bank will give you whatever it was on the card. i had help my wife to filled out the w-4 form on the day where is was filling out the proper paperwork and she claim zero dependents on the w-4. all total, she made under $700.00 dollars for the time she had worked there. can someone tell me why there wasn't no federal taxes taken out. is it becaused she was waiting for her aos to be approved. i don't understand this all tax think. your answers will be helpful. thank you everyone.

I'm not an accountant but I am thinking that your wife didn't earn enough to have federal taxes taken out. If not it still doesn't matter file your taxes for the year in April and you will just owe maybe $200 if that but if you are working too then you probably wont owe anything at all.

They took out FICA and Medicare, right?

If she makes less than a certain amount, she won't pay any withholding, because her personal exemption and standard deduction would wipe out any taxes.

Just like what everyone else has said.... your wife did not earn enough money for the federal taxes to be deducted. This has nothing to do wirh her status. I do payroll ar my job and we have a part time guy who works approx 8 hours in a two-week pay period, and he has none taken out, and state tax is minimal.
