I know USC don't need a visa to travel to EU countries as long as they are staying for less than 90 days. What about green card holder? do i need a visa to travel to Germany?

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think the Green Card has anything to do with Visa requirements for Germany, it's the citizenship that counts.

Here's a list of who needs a visa:

http://www.auswaertiges-amt.de/diplo/en/Wi...sumpflicht.html

Here's a link to general visa requirements for Germany: http://www.germanembassy.org.au/en/welcome/visa/index.html

Hope this helps!

Excellent question. I was just wondering that myself. I could have sworn (but don't count on this...I have to find the email first) that I emailed the Germany Embassy and they said that if the person had a I551 stamp or or permanent residency card in the US, that they did not reqire a visa. I was sent a PDF of some inter office memo, and now if I could just find it......

Each country has its own requirements. If you hold an Indian passport then yes, you will need a visa. It does not matter if you hold a green card; your citizenship if it is that of a country which normally requires a visa then you will need it.

Paul and I met on the Bazaar on the 14th January (he joined my progressive rock forum that day)

July 3rd he flew to England to meet me

We fell in love while he drove all over the place coz I cannot read maps (we were supposed to go to Ingleton - but touched Darlington 4 times, Pierce Bridge 6 times, Scotch Corner twice and Bernard Castle twice and we never did make it to Ingleton)

It has been so long and so much has happened in between...

The simple answer to your question: the visa/status of a non-US-citizen makes absolutely no difference to EU or UK visa requirements. If you needed a visa to visit from your own country of citizenship (prior to your ever coming to US), then you will need one when you have a GC.

(admittedly, I'm speaking from a somewhat "privileged" position of not needing a visa--due to having Canadian passport--since 1982).

This is according to my understanding of how diplomatic missions work after having worked in various missions for over 20 odd years.

Of course dual-nationals between one country whose nationals DO require visa (say Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Venezuela, etc) and another which doesn't (Canada) can use the passport of the exempt nation easily.

Yes, visa is required. Fee of $45 and $15 for mailing of the passport back to the applicant.

Unfortunately, if you have never applied for a German visa before, you have to show up in person to hand in all relevant documentation. (<vent>that is silly! They only have 9 consulates and they except you to fly to one of those 9 cities? </vent.)

Tourist visit to Germany

Visa needed?

Entry clearance requirements are dependent on the citizenship of the applicant. Citizens of many countries do not need a visa to visit Germany for stays up to 90 days. Please check our visa requirement list if you are not sure whether you need a visa.

Required Documents

- fully completed application form (only German and English versions accepted) and required declaration

- two passport photographs (strict requirements, see details)

- valid national passport and one copy

- original of valid US alien registration card or valid US resident visa (type A, E, F, G, H, I, J, L, O, R) and one copy

- your current bank statement (I don't have a bank account / My friends in Germany pay for my visit) and one copy

- confirmation letter from your health insurance stating coverage with a minimum of 37.500.- US-$ for trips outside the US (Why do I need health insurance?) and one copy

- reference letter from your employer (I'm self-employed and run my own business)

- proof of group travel/hotel reservation/airline reservation and one copy

- visa fees

Ireland is part of the EU, in fact they belong also to the Euro-using-zone. If you get a visa for Ireland and enter the EU through Ireland you won't need a visa for Germany (read about Schengen and EU border protection).

I don't think it's silly that people have to apply personally for a visa since with that visa people can travel to every country within the EU freely, so if Germany issues somebody a visa and this person is bad and harms another EU country it's bad publicity. Like I don't want to be responsible that my country issued a visa for a real bad person and then turns out to be a terrorist.

Apart from that, didn't we all had to travel to American Consulates in our homecountries??? ;) Nobody complains about that!

BTW read about the German equivalent of AOS, and you will find out, it is much easier....

I guess you must still be a little sleepy--last I checked, Dublin is THE CAPITOL OF Ireland.

Or maybe you meant either "Dublin to Germany" or "BERlin to Ireland"?

For Anna C: I have not yet seen any country with immigration procedures (in the 2 years prior to my getting GC, I'd told more than one doc's office to just write "sky-high" for the BP reading as I felt that would be accurate enough) as complex and outdated as those of US.

-- I assumed they will enter the EU in Dublin and then have a connection flight to Berlin/Munich/wherever (probably RyanAir ;) )....

:D Agreed! I remember my medical... White coat effect?! Somehow my BP was higher than ever, and I just had a physical today and it was below 100 values now..... ;) I just happen to know some facts about the German immigration since a friend has an Algerian husband. And I did some research how to get hubbie a German passport.....
