My fiancee is from indonesia, but lives and works in hong kong right now. I want to start the k1 process, fiancee visa. Is it easy enough to do on my own, or is it best to hire a lawyer and pay about 2k. Can someone let me know which is the best way

I did it myself following the guides from the USCIS and VJ website also I was asking questions on this site. I was getting a lot of help from VJ members. I think there is no need of lawyer for the normal case.

If either of you is not that busy or occupied,it is best to just do it yourself. We hired an attorney and we ended up being frustrated because they not only cost so much money but they are also the cause of delay. They asked documents one at a time, just like we asked what we could do after our papers are being reviewed at the USCIS ..They said nothing,but when the time comes, we were supposed to be already preparing for the tax transcripts and W2 including those documents of our co-sponsor.

I am going to go at it mostly alone. However, I have contacted an immigration specialist and she is willing to look over my packet for a small fee. This way, I will prepare everything myself and save some money, yet still have a professional review it. I have called several lawyers, and many are willing to answer questions for free. In addition there are downloadable books out there (like this one. http://www.pcurtislaw.com/k1-fiance-visa-guide ( I cannot verify its usefulness but I am considering purchasing it. This website also has free advice about what to include in your petition.)) So, from the websites, the USCIS 800 number, lawyers, my immigration specialist, I plan to get everything I need. One last thing: USCIS has info centers that you can visit that will help you with your questions as well.

It takes a few hours to get the application ready, and then you're just going to wait a few months. If you missed something, the USCIS will send you an RFE and ask for whatever you may have forgotten (this does delay processing, so try to get it right). Almost all K-1s are approved, so other than some careful reading, you don't need a lawyer (and it seems there are a lot who are crooks and selling BS, dig around for a few threads here about bogus advice people have received).

If you have some complicated situation, perhaps past immigration issues, then legal help may be useful, but if you just want to move your fiance to the US, you should be fine. If you could figure out how to find this website, create an account, post a question and followup to replies, you have the basic skills required. :)
