Or you could get a pile in Denton for about $120,000, but it won't have personality. ;)

If I'm house shopping, I won't be looking for personality. I'm pretty utilitarian, I like the basics at a reasonable total cost of ownership. What I have right now (3br townhouse) is devoid of personality, but it has what I need. Where it falls short is in the total cost of ownership aspect, thanks to the 'property tax crises' in this state.

I know someone who is moving to Lewisville. Well he said it, he didn't write it, it's either Louisville or Lewisville.

Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is.

You're right on, homesick_american! I lived near Preston and Forest for several years before I moved to Addison. I teach at White (go Longhorns!) and my daughter attends. Small world, huh? It's a wonderful school despite the district to which it belongs. I taught high school in Oak Cliff for seven years before transferring to White and I assume most DISD schools are like that Oak Cliff school or worse :(

On the bright side, most of Dallas's magnet schools are kick ###!

You'd probably like Lewisville then...or even Denton. Denton is VERY cheap. :yes:

Right on. I lived near Preston and Forest for several years before I moved to Addison. I teach at White (go Longhorns!) and my daughter attends. Small world, huh? Oak Cliff is a toilet; it's horrible. There are only three high schools in Dallas worth a squirt of piss and those are White, Hillcrest, and Wilson. Hillcrest isn't as good as it used to be, mainly because the surrounding area is so obscenely wealthy now that most of those parents have turned their backs on the public schools in favor of schools like St Marks, Hockaday, Ursuline, and Jesuit. I hear White has improved tremendously in the last 15 years, and Wilson's always been good.

I think we'll head for the burbs, though; I wouldn't want my kids to have to put up with all the political bullsh!t in the DISD. I think my brother and I got good educations, but I think my parents would not choose to put us through Pershing/Franklin/Hillcrest again. Did the NAACP finally drop its lawsuit? Is John Wiley Price still protesting at Townview? That's the kind of ####### I wouldn't want them to have to deal with.

And you're right about the magnet schools....Booker T is a great school, and isn't the engineering magnet nationally recognized? Y'know, Norah Jones went to the arts magnet. :yes:

DISD=Dallas Independent School District

I have no idea about the John W. Price ####### or a boycott at Townview. I'm so removed from the politics of the district. But I have heard that Hillcrest HAS gone downhill. White still has very strong parental support and an excellent administration.

I actually turned down a job at Booker T. Erykah Badu also attended that school. :thumbs:

I love Dallas, especially where I live. (L)

Yeah, I was sorry to hear about Hillcrest but given the changing composition of some of the east Dallas neighborhoods feeding it plus the obscene new wealth in the north Dallas feeder 'hoods, it was inevitable. Seems like most public schools in Dallas have gone to the dogs; parental support is so important. We had fantastic parental support when I was in high school and it made a huge difference. I hope White and Wilson don't lose it...because if they do, it's sayonara to their reputations.

I heard a rumor...don't know if it's true...that some of the parents who still wanted to use DISD schools, i.e. the ones who couldn't swing $20,000 a year per child for private school, lobbied hard to have their school switched from Hillcrest to White because HHS was getting overcrowded with kids who couldn't speak English. Dunno if that's true, but it wouldn't surprise me one little bit.

Dallas does kick ###, but only if you send your kids to the right school. ;)

I don't know if that rumor is true but don't get me started on the what's happening to those neighborhood schools as far as demographics. ok, I'll just say a small thing. It blows my mind to look around the neighborhoods of schools like Pershing, Franklin, Hillcrest, AND White and realize that most of the kids who live in those neighborhoods don't attend those schools. And if they did, WHERE THE HECK WOULD THEY FIT at this point? *sigh* OK. That's all I will say about that.

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

Yeah, I hear the overcrowding's really bad, mostly because Dallas hasn't built new schools where all the overcrowders are coming from. I think Dallas also has not accepted its exploding Latin-American population quite yet. They're not going ANYWHERE, y'all!
