I am taking contracts from odesk and elance and I can say that yes, they're legit but don't expect to get paid much. With contractors from SE or East Asia bidding for minimum of $1, no contract awarded to you if you ask for US minimum wage, unless you already have a portfolio.
I like to do it part-time just to keep me busy while I'm looking for a job. I just apply to those who are looking for a 10-20 hours a week contracts. It wouldn't hurt to try it, you will learn a lot from it too.
My two cents' worth.
12-27-2010 (Day 11) NOAs received thru USPS plus Biometrics schedule for 1/12/2011 @ Michigan City IN and Rejection Notice for I-131.
01-05-2011 (Day 20) I-131 Refiled
01-12-2011 (Day 27) Biometrics completed in 10 minutes (whereas the drive is 1.5 hrs one-way, thanks to snowstorm in IN)
01-31-2011 (Day 46) RFE received (received via email alert)
02-22-2011 (Day 68) Response to RFE received by USCIS (received via email alert)
03-03-2011 (Day 77) EAD Card in Production (received via email alert)
03-14-2011 (Day 88) EAD/AP Combo Card Received

I have friends who are working in odesk..they took the oDesk Readiness Test for Agency Contractors for them to be qualified to apply a maximum of 15 jobs per week..at first they earn a minimum of $1/hour on data entry jobs, order processing etc since they are new to odesk..and now they earn a minimum of $15-35/hours...

Is this site actually legitimate? As soon as I typed in "Odesk", the first thing that Google found was Odesk Scam..... :S
ODesk is legitimate: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ODesk A number of online companies do get reported as scam due to dissatisfied customers or disputes over payments and things like that, but the ones that have been mentioned so far all appear to be legitimate sources.

Hi there! I am interested with this work but do i have to have work permit in order to work for them? I am still waiting for my EAD....
Thanks!
You can work in odesk even if you don't have a work permit..all you have to do is register and take the readiness test for you to be able to apply for at least 15 jobs per week. There are lots of successful people in there that earned bucks doing online jobs..if you have a call center experience, thats a plus..coz you can be a call center agent at home and the rate is good...and you can chose a lot of jobs depending on your skills..

Wrong!! It is NOT legal to work without an EAD or GC. Just because its an online job doesn't make it legal.
Unless you want to do it under the table that's totally up to you, otherwise you need to wait for your EAD.
