Maybe not the BEST method but I chose to send USDs by Western Union. It is a bit expensive but I like the fact that printed documentation of each the transfer benefits us in the way of supplemental evidence of our relationship.

moneygram? in indonesia its cheaper then western union

I agree. Moneygram was always cheaper than WU and you still have the same paper trail for establishing bonafides.

We use Moneygram for transfers to Ukraine as well. I have never tried to send money from Ukraine. The best method is a money belt, when you come back  Probably no help.

We used and continue to use, when needed, ATM withdrawl to both send an receive money. We have accounts in both countries, ATM cards for all. We drop money in Sergey's account here and he takes it out by ATM in Moscow, for example

It may depend on how much you are talking about. If you just sold a home and want the money sent to the U.S., then a bank transfer wire maybe the best bet since often it is a flat rate. That of course does not take into account laws that may be in place to tax large withdrawals, so check with your bank.

As to those using Western Union, the delayed service is pretty cheap. I never used Moneygram so I can't comment on it's cost.

I will start using Moneygram. It cost me 50 USD to send 500 USD a few days ago via W.U. vs. 31 USD for the same amount if I were using Moneygram. Thanks.

Before Sergey opened his account here and had his debit card, I used to send $300 per month by Moneygram for $9.99. If I am not mistaken (and maybe it changed) you could send up to $500 for that amount. I never paid $31. WU charges in the neighborhood of 10% and that is just crazy.

$8-10 is the price at WallMart, but maybe the price FROM Ukraine is different?

You really need to check out the delayed service (48 hours). I send $600 every couple of months to a friend who picks it up for my mother in law. $100 is for her the balance is spread out over a couple of months for the MIL. The cost to send $600 is only $18.

I told you delayed service is cheap. B-)

Here's a general question...how do you know if you can trust the Ukrainian bank enough to do a wire transfer? That's the issue my wife and I are looking at since her mother plans to sell her apartment in Ukraine and send the money here to the USA.

My wife personally knows people who have been ripped off by supposedly reputable banks for much smaller amounts. One friend even took them to court and won, but the bank still didn't pay since...well, who's going to come and enforce that? We need to sell the apartment and get the money here, but my wife doesn't trust the banks, realtors, potential buyers, or lawyers that could advise on the situation. I feel like we are dealing with the wild west.

A wire transfer seems to be the way to go IF everything was functioning in a legitimate way and it's a big sum of money.

Wife's visa journey:

03/19/07: Initial mailing of I-129F.

07/07/11: U.S. Citizenship approved and Oath Ceremony!

MIL's visa journey:

07/26/11: Initial mailing of I-130.

05/22/12: Interview passed!
