I saw on MSNBC that if the Government Shuts down it says no visa's or passports will be worked on.. They would shut down the process... Does this mean the USCIS stage and the NVC stage or is it just the NVC stage??

From what i read if i does happen it will be NVC and consulates not USCIS.

AS USCIS is self funded, it is paid for by applicant fee. Even though the its the same case with NVC we pay application fees.

Go figure

Both!

If USCIS shuts down then the fees we pay them mean nothing.. Our fees are what pay the employees who process the petitions. If this is the case why would USCIS shut down??

FYI - on Laurel Scott's chat this AM she said this about the possible government shut down-

"There is a possibility that the federal government will shut down starting next week. The politicians are working to avert that contingency, but it remains looming. If the government does shut down, we expect the government will stop working on all of our cases, including expedite cases and humanitarian parole cases. There is nothing we can do about this. After the shutdown is over, we expect a backlog."

http://www.goinglegal.com/article_2162651_18.html

"The American Department of State is primarily responsible for the "back end" of the U.S. Immigration process as most immigrant visa and K-1 visa applications for loved ones abroad must be adjudicated by a United States Embassy or United States Consulate with appropriate Consular jurisdiction. Before a visa application can be adjudicated at a US Mission abroad it must first process through the United States National Visa Center. The reason that the NVC and the US Missions abroad are being mentioned in this article is due, in part, to the fact that were a government shutdown to occur processing of visa applications at NVC and US Missions abroad could effectively cease :o until such time as the controversy in the USA is resolved and the US government "reopens" for business. Therefore, those with pending visa matters before the United States immigration apparatus should be prepared for possible delays in the visa process should the United States government shutdown."

She's an immigration attorney that specializes in waivers. Alot of people on VJ are familiar with her name.

Again how is the USCIS stage affected?? They are not government funded as I have been told

From the link that Ivriesling provided above:

"The United States Citizenship and Immigration Service (commonly referred to by the acronym USCIS) is the governmental body that generally begins the visa process as this agency is responsible for adjudicating petitions for immigration benefits. Luckily for some of those hoping to acquire immigration benefits it would appear that a government shutdown is not likely to adversely effect USCIS processing as USCIS primarily receives funding through the application and petition fees received in connection with requests for immigration benefits. Although, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) is not the US agency with exclusive jurisdiction over the whole of the United States visa process."

Soo if you believe that link, looks like USCIS wouldn't be affected much (if any).
