I would like to thank the creator of Visajourney, the People who shared their experiences here from Fiancee Visa up to application of US passport. A BIG thank you all.

Finally after my 2 times of being descheduled for the interview in ATL , I finally had it yesterday and even had my oath at the same day as well !

Here is my experience:

We left our house at 5am for my 7:15 Am appointment. We arrived 6:20AM and the building was not open until 6:40 AM.

Cellphones and cameras were allowed inside in the building but just be courteous when you are using your phone so as not disturb others.

I checked in my appointment @ first floor and was given a ticket for the 3rd floor even though my appointment letter stated 1st floor.

We waited for my number to be called at waiting area @ 3RD Floor. There I met a filipina and so happy to see one.

By 7:20AM I was called in and the officer introduced himself. He was a bit formal and I just kept smiling .

He never smiled at me while we had the interview. He go over my files which contained my fiance documents up to my N400 and I am amazed how thick the file was .

He asked all the information I wrote in my N-400 application and checked them all as I gave him my answers. One question he asked about my phone number and I gave him my home phone and then I said in my file I used my cell number.

He asked my if I studied for the test and I said yes. He only asked me 4 questions and every answer I gave He wrote it down.

1. What will you do when you become a US Citizen?

2. Who is the Governor of the State?

3. Where is the Statue of Liberty Located?

4. Who was the first President?

Next, he asked me to read what was written in the Paper: Who lives in the White House?

lastly he gave me a blank paper to write his dictation: The President lives in the White House.

He told me that I passed the test and the interview and asked me if I want to be a US Citizen at 2pm. I said a big yes to him.:)

He told me to wait for my name to be called at the second floor . He has to gave my files to the supervisor first and have him checked everything and oath appointment will be given to me.

After Few minutes , My IO came and asked me to come back to his office. He told me that there is a glitch on my name ( sort of) and that scared me a bit.

He said that according to my Birth certificate my middle name is my mom's maiden name. I told him that in my country when a woman married she dropped her mother's maiden name and take her father's name as the middle name then take the husband''s last name. He called an asian girl who works there and he asked her. She told him that some countries are like that. But then , the supervisor told him that if I hAve to follow that style I have to wait for 6 months for an oath. The IO said that either I take my mom's or no middle name. I told him that I felt strange to lose that name . I am so used to it. I told him that to simplify things i will just have no middle name. He asked me to affix my signature again to the oath appointment with the new name . So now I have first name and my husband's last name.

I went to the second floor too wait for my oath ceremony appointment and told my husband about it.

Anyway, @ 9 Am we were done and have to wait for 2pm oath ceremony. We went to eat and kill time at the Mall.

All I can say is that the ceremony was an awesome experience. I am proud to be an American after 3 years and 5 months of being here!

THANK YOU SO MUCH VISAJOURNEY !!! and Thank you ALL! And Thank you GOD!

God is Great .. God is good... all the time..

Wow! Congratulations on being a U.S. citizen!!! Wonderful news!!!

That does seem strange to wait 6 months if you decide to use your maiden name as your new middle name. Most, if not all, Filipinas follow that convention.

Congratulations again!

He said that according to my Birth certificate my middle name is my mom's maiden name. I told him that in my country when a woman married she dropped her mother's maiden name and take her father's name as the middle name then take the husband''s last name.

In my wifes' home country, surname is her fathers' surname followed by her mothers' maiden name. When a woman gets married, her fathers' surname is remains the same, but her mothers' surname is replaced by her new married name.

In this country typical to separate those two last names with a hyphen, like maiden-married name. Wife also used that format here, could have corrected that, but just let it go. She also has a given first and middle name, so really not a name, but a paragraph, LOL! On like credit cards and your drivers' license, not enough space to print all that, so just used her first given name, middle initial, dropped her maiden name, and used her married last name. This was also done on her certificate and on her SS card as well.

What gets complicated is when filling out mostly USCIS type forms is typing in all those other names or aliases as they call them. In her case, birth name, previous married name, new married name with her dads' name stuck in the middle, and then finally her new married name. On other stuff like taxes, I just used her married last name, but the phone company put in her maiden name first so she was way back in the directory.

She is just using her married name now, and feel as long as we don't deal with the USCIS again, won't be a problem. Ha, one of her friends was married and divorced five times, she definitely needed a separate sheet of paper, had two kids with different last names, yet another sheet of paper to explain that.

Least your alien and SS number always remains the same. It was no problem for my wife to drop her maiden name for citizenship and will also make life here a lot simpler for you.

Congratulations!

The reason why it takes so long to change the name is that it is considered a legal name change and it has to be approved first through a Judge. The paperwork is sent to the Judge who reviews it and then approves it and sends it back. The Oath ceremony is then scheduled so it can take up to 6 months depending on how long it takes for the Judge to approve the name change petition.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”
