I am in uSA on a CR-1 visa. I have a valid UK licence, can i obtain a IDP (international drving permit) to drive around until I get my proper KS driving license

You don't need one as your UK licence is accepted in the US for up to 12 months. Driving's not the issue.. insurance is. So now you know you can drive.. but are you coverable by insurance? I know my husbands doesn't cover me unless I have a US licence.

When we first had to get a car in the US, which was before we moved over here, we had to get my UKC husband covered by insurance since I didn't have a full UK driver's licence and had no US one. Geico were more than happy to insure him with his UK licence.

You generally have to get a state licese with thirty days of establishing residence.

Most on this board establish residency when they arrive, residency is required for AOS.

It looks from the Kansas DMV site that it's up to one year on a non-US licence, but confusingly new residents need to get one within 90 days (although it does say that's for out-of-state drivers...). The Kansas DMV website is terribly disorganised! Anyway, it looks like at the minimum 90 days and at the maximum one year. I may have muddied the waters even further.

For my husband, it was quick and easy. We had to supply the proper documentation - his indian DL, passport & greencard, social security card (since he's a LPR), and proof of address. He took the written and driving test, and we were done. Since he wasn't a USC, they did send his info to be background checked, so he received a temporary license for two weeks, and they mailed him the permanent one. Other than that little wait, it was easy!

summation of our experience with a k-1 getting a kansas dl:

nessa had to get one within the time specified by elmcity - problem was the local dmv office didn't have a lot of experience with k-1's and we went round and round a few times about her being eligible to get a license. i had to make contact with the next higher office in mission ks to straighten it all out.

as i recall, she didn't have a ssn at the time, but we did show the marriage license.
