Every day there´s at least one new thread asking what touched means. Isn´t it good to have a stickied thread to say what it means, and how to create an account, and check your status?

It´s getting quite annoying.

Touched: USCIS has done something (sometimes unknown) with your case/file. The last updated date will usually change on the website to alert you.

How about starting with this explanation from the USCIS Online Status FAQ,

"The case status information on [the USCIS Online Status] site is updated regularly throughout the business day. If any action is taken regarding your case, the change will be reflected on this site within a few minutes of the action-taking place."

then adding the caveat ' - maybe'.

Pin it in the threads where the questions typiclly get asked. The kind of person who typically asks this question does not typically read FAQs.

Unfortunately they don't typically read pinned threads or other threads on the same subject, either.

Maybe that entire part can be moved up to the top of the FAQ and in much bigger type.

If someone doesn't know the acronyms, they're that much more likely to get overwhelmed by what they read, because it won't make any sense.

I totally agree with that.

An easily seen section for "Definitions/Acronyms" would be a great addition.

I also couldn't find the abbreviations until Aussie pointed them out to me, which is why I started a thread about it a while back. (http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=15344)

If this idea is implemented, then acronyms like SO and OP should definitely be included.

Anyway, here is my crack at trying to explain it to Newbies.

(Maybe someone can clean it up and make it more reader-friendly, because I tend to get very long-winded.)

• Touched: Any time your application is handled by someone at a Service Centre, the barcode is scanned, which results in an update to the "last date" for your case on the USCIS website. When the date changes, this mean that someone has physically handled or "touched" your case. There are many reasons your application may be "touched" - from simply being moved from one desk to another, to RFE's, to being approved.
  You can check your online status for "touches" anytime, using your receipt number,
  here:

but you need to sign up for this service first, which you can do
here: https://egov.immigration.gov/cris/jsps/selectusertype.jsp.
Each time the date is updated, the previous "touch" date is erased,
so only the last date your case has been "touched" will be kept track of there.
