If he is Diabetic and has medication to treat it he should know how to adjust his medication to get his sugar level down.

If he has no medication and he cant see his doctor until next week he should go to ER.

Exercise a lot and of course watch his diet. My mom`s blood sugar level went up to 508 before, she felt very weak so she went to the doctor. Right after she knew it, she just started exercise, walking every morning, diet and now her sugar level is normal. She still continues walking for an hour or two every morning until now.

Does he feel funny?/dizzy? give him insuline if you have any. Let him exercise. Monitor his sugar and if it doesn't go down head to the ER. 238 is high, but not too bad. I always found it worse when they are too low on sugar. Hope he feels better soon.

It's much easier to raise blood sugar than lower it. Have him drink plenty of water and exercise. If he's taking insulin, a small dose probably wouldn't be a bad idea... just keep an eye on his levels to make sure he doesn't drop too much. 238 is high, but in most cases it isn't life threatening. If it stays in that range for longer periods of time, he could have other complications though.

Make sure he's taking his medication properly and following his diet as closely as possible. If it isn't coming back down, you could always call his doctor and see what they suggest.

My doctor advises a trip to the ER if mine gets around 400 or above, but his doctor might feel differently.

My mother is diabetic and she says that rice (white) and even a baked potato makes her blood sugar level shoot up really fast.

Actually, white rice and potatoes (along with white bread) are among the worst things you can possibly eat in terms of your glycemic index.

Brown rice, lentils and beans are the suggested substitutes I believe.

My husband first developed diabetes a little over a year ago, and the only signs were weight loss and having to use the restroom all the time. Anyway after that went on for a little while, we finally bought a test kit, thinking no way he has diabetes since he's in his early 30's, and his sugar was near 400. He made an appt to go to the Dr but in the mean time, he had to exercise after meals to keep it closer to a normal level.

Are you asking b/c he ran out of meds, or the usual doses just aren't working anymore? Avoid heavy carb foods, and if any carbs are eaten exercise exercise exercise! Bagels, rice, pasta, pancakes, anything very starchy are all very bad if your sugar level is rising. They will shoot it up fast. We experimented and it was amazing how fast it effected the level. And exercise did work to get rid of a lot of the extra sugar. But he still needed to go on meds, but not insulin.

No offense intended, but this is the WORST place to come for this kind of information, especially if you need it ASAP. Call his doctor, and if it's an emergency take him to an emergency room.

I second that motion.

Let's say someone has a DR's appt in one hour, but would like to know what to do RIGHT now to lower blood sugar until the appt. A post like this could be useful. If anyone thinks someone is actually using VJ as their Dr, that's funny.
