Sometime ago... I posted about me getting my PPD test positive but negative CXR which ends up to more complications!!!!

a. I was told to take 9 months prevention treatment -- which I did!

b. my husband's visit with his kids has been suspended by the X --- ends up another court thing again--more delay again for me to meet them!!

..... Both me and my husband took the QuantiFeron test and turns out to be NEGATIVE!!!!! It was a false positive for my PPD TEST!

..........Finally I no longer need to continue the meds because the last test we took clearly says we've never been exposed to someone with TB! The agony of the side effect of the meds is a pain in the b*tt!! FINALLY I'm done! Thank God

Congrats :thumbs::thumbs::thumbs:

How much was the quantiferon test? i ought to have my kids go through that test also. It is not available in the health department here in our county, it would have been nice if it was coz it would spell cheaper or even free quantiferon test for the kids.

Anyhow, congrats talaga, i am soo happy for you. wala ng agam-agam sa health mo

Thanks sis! Finally!

Actually sis I got it for free in the health department here. The doctor told us we're lucky because they have just started it coz if not we'll be paying around $250 - $ 270. My goody! That's how expensive it is!

I'm so happy!!

Positive PPD test means you were exposed to a person with Tb, in which the Philippines is endemic with. Exposure wouldn't mean you have Tb disease unless proven otherwise with the gold standard for its diagosis which is the Tb culture. PPD test is not interchangeable with Quantiferon Tb Gold Test. Quantiferon has just been approved by USFDA to check for Tb suspect patients. Negative Quantiferon means that you will be unlikely to have TB disease. It is not yet widely used in practice because there are still only few data to support its use.

False positive PPD result is seen in patients with kidney failure, diabetes , health care workers and those who receive BCG vaccine. Many people who were born outside the United States may have had a vaccine "BCG," which can lead to a false-positive test result. However, many experts believe that a past BCG vaccination should not change the PPD result when the test is done 15 years after the vaccination.

dbears, it is not yet recommended for use in persons younger than 17 years of age, as there are only limited data regarding its use. It is still a new diagnosic test.

Sometimes it's just unfair to think of the fact that because the Philippines is a high risk country of this disease, everyone who had been confirmed with positive PPD had been exposed with someone with active TB. Even though nobody in the family has the disease nor any pulmonary infections. It's just like saying Philippines is not safe. What if the reading has been bias? How about if a positive reaction requires 15mm or more of hard swelling at the site and the person has no known risk of the disease? Since you got 13 mm and you came from the Philippines, then your positive?!

Now I am more thankful of this another test... the QuantiFeron test because of the following advantages :

* Requires a single patient visit to draw a blood sample.

* Results can be available within 24 hours.

* Does not boost responses measured by subsequent tests, which can happen with tuberculin skin tests (TST).

* Is not subject to reader bias that can occur with TST.

* Is not affected by prior BCG (bacille Calmette-Guérin) vaccination.

Although this test has just been started this has been approved way back 2005.

What is it?

The QuantiFERON®-TB Gold test (QFT-G) is a whole-blood test for use as an aid in diagnosing Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection, including latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) and tuberculosis (TB) disease. This test was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2005.

QuantiFeron test

Whatever it is I am very happy that I AM NEGATIVE!!!

Thank GOD!
