kilo ng hipon or ibang seafoods.?

Maraming Salamat..

I would allot $225 for the 5 people, dont be a cheapskate (kirpot) and dont add just the minimum to get by for the people you want to support/give. $225 at a rate of Php45 per $1 would give them (Php10125)which is plenty and then some to live off. You are a USC living 45 times the rate in the province of the Philippines, so dont be a cheapsake, share your wealth to your love ones back home.

Thank you for the response. Actually this question does not belong to me.. This is for my friend who does not work in the US.. and just depending to her husband.. Since I am not living in the Philippines for many years, I dont know what to tell her.. So to give her comfort, I will have her read all the opinions in VJ...

If the person does not work, how will he/she send money? If that is the case, give as much as he/she can. Again, I would start at Php10000 which is $225 and start working backwards, meaning lesser if I cant afford that. $225 may seem a lot but believe me, its not, even in the province. I could never live off $225 in the province especially to support 5 people. That is basically only P22 per person per meal or roughly $0.44 a meal.

I really dont know.. probably ask her husband.. She can not work as she needs to get better with her english.. :help: I told her, I can teach her by talking to me in english not Tagalog, this way she could be more confident and not shy dealing with people..

prices are soaring high out here. it might be a little helpful if we know what city your friend is from.

if she lives in key cities like cebu & davao, prices are likely higher compared to areas distal from the suburbs.

i'm from cebu, given the list above (and since i do most of the grocery), here's how each item approximately cost:

RICE

it depends on what type of rice they prefer using. there's low-grade rice for 38 PHP per kilo (broken rice) and there's high grade rice like GANADOR @47 PHP, FANCY RICE for 52 PHP.

CHICKEN

135 PHP per kilo.

PORK MEAT

160 PHP per kilo (lean meat) but prices vary depending on what part of the pork you want.

FISH AND SEAFOODS

depends on what type of fish or seafoods you'd wanna buy. some as cheap as 30 PHP per kilo and some as expensive as 200++ PHP per kilo.

VEGETABLES

prices of vegetables has gone up since the typhoon Frank. imagine, a kilo of eggplant which used to cost only 40 PHP per kilo is now 70 PHP per kilo.

SPICES

onions, which is a staple in almost all filipino dishes is sold in markets for 140 PHP. garlic is slightly cheaper so as with ginger.

if you'd ask how much she should spare for a month's sustenence (for 5 people), she has consider some factors like:

GENDER

male tend to eat more since they have a more active lifestyle that females. if majority of the 5 are males, then she must have a little allowance for her budget.

AGE

teens eat more than elders or kids.

LIFESTYLE

she has to consider what each members are "used to" eating, how often they eat, etc.

225 USD a month? hmm, you must be kidding right? i know you gys might think that with the current exchange rate of 1 USD=45 PHP, anyone with dollars is blessed..lol. seriously, kidding aside..225 USD would be enough if the family lives far from the city where i'm not so sure if prices are indeed cheaper or just the same, no students to cook baon everyday and a family with a very simple lifestyle.

and of course, the 225 USD should be excluding other expenses like electric bills, phone bills, water bills, internet bills, etc.

I would suggest that your friend send the amount of money she can afford right now. Its hard to give a baseline if she does not have means to support her family in the province. It might put a strain on her marriage.

The other thing i want to convey... .. its not the amount of money you have.. its how you spend the money. Either your friend give them USD $ 500 a month or USD $100, if the her family in the province doesnt know the proper way of handling money... no matter the amount she gives.. it wont be enough. But if her family knows how to spend it, no matter how small it is... they will survive. Filipinos are resilient. We are survivor.
