Passport using SINGLE NAME VS. MARRIED NAME

To my VJ Family I need your assistance & help.

When we filed/applied for I-130 wherein a photocopy of a valid passport is one of the basic & major requirement/s, I sent the photocopy of my Philippine Passport with my SINGLE NAME all throughout the process started from USCIS to NVC. But in our I-130 application and NVC DS-230 forms we used and put my MARRIED NAME. Does it will affect and bring confusion to the interviewing consulate if ever? Or do I need to amend my Philippine Passport using my married name? My passport is still valid until October 2009.

Lastly, what are the necessary documents I should prepare/bring during the CR1/CR2 interview aside from PROOF OF A GENUINE MARRIAGE/RELATIONSHIP? I believe NVC has everything already and the latter will forward the same original documents to USEM-Consulate. We are anticipating for an August 2008 interview. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

We've been in the same situation, I had mine amended and sent it to NVC during the process, they give me letter of acknowledgment that my Married name is recognized and it doesn't delay the process at all. I made the amendment on before I receive the letter of appointment for interview, that was during teh time they requested for evidences, while I completing the documents, I then sent a separate letter with my amended passport. They put A.K.A. in my Immigration document. When they printed my VISA it still bears my name when I am single no matter how I instructed the Pre-screener that I want my VISA printer bearing my married name.

When I paid Delbros, I signed my married name in the receipt but I showed Delbros delivery man my IDs bearing my name when I was single. I guess it was understood because it has A.K.A. on it anyway.

Hi blairbitch, are u suggesting that either i will amend my passport or not it doesn't change anything? the visa still be in my single name? I understands CR1 visa is good for 2 years meaning if USEM will issue a US Immigrant visa for me it would be August 2008 to August 2010. My God im totally confused now, because my passport's validity is until October 2009, after the lapsation period time could it be possible to get a new passport in USA using/bearing my MARRIED NAME??? What should I do now? Does anyone here can help me with this? Please Thanks.

Hello there stevent, thank you so much for this information. Yes I have read this from Shape's thread before. hey ,

I used my married name to file my i130 and i am still using my passport with my maiden name. I went for my interview and I had no problems! They will issue your interview appointment letter with the name in your passport , as well as issue the visa in the name you have in your passport. However , when your green card is issued it will be issued in the name you used to file your i130!

Hope this helps.

Hello Chavelle, thanks for this at least i feel relieve now. I have a question again, what if my Philippine Passport will lapse on October 2009, if i am going to get one, do i still need to get a Philippine passport of a U.S. blue passport? I am married to a USC, & i know i am going to change my domicile to America but as much as possible I want to have a dual citizenship. Thanks.

Hey there,

You will need to renew your Philippine passport , as you will not be eligible to apply for a us passport until you become a citizen! Upon admission here you will receive a two/ten year green card. If you have been married for more than two years on the day you enter the united states as an immigrant, then you will have the ten year green card. I think you only have to wait three years before you are eligible to apply for citizenship, if you wish. In relation to your dual citizenship, you can have citizenship in philippines as well as the us because you were born in the philippines.

Good luck!!!

Hey ,

you will have to send a copy of your marriage certificate to the service center when you receive your green card, with form i-90 which carries a fee of $290 plus $80 for biometrics if applicable. Don't think you can change anything at this stage, until you receive your green card. It would have been easier if you used your married name to file the papers because you would not need to change it, hence no payment.

Hope this helps! Good luck!!!

Hi there Chavelle, ur words really help a lot. I am thinking now since i still have the time to renew my passport and just use/change my single name to married name before my August 2008 Interview. Does it will affect our application? because I sent USCIS & NVC the photocopy of my Philippine Passport using my SINGLE NAME. If i will change it now, after interview, once the visa will be issued it will bear my MARRIED NAME or SINGLE NAME? Thanks again.

hi filiricans! as far as i know and i have read in VJ they used their single full names... like what shape experienced during her delbros document verification i think, robie told her that she need to use her full single name because the embassy was confused. you can try to ask shape about this matter... i hope it helps...

Hello there stevent, thank you so much for this information. Yes I have read this from Shape's thread before. Im just confused because I used my married name when applying for the petition but the funny thing is, I'm still using my single name in my passport & haven't change it. I'm reluctant to do it because my goodness knowing the applicants lines there in DFA its a NIGHTMARE & HORRIBLE!!!

HeLLo there!

I can relate mine to this topic, Before we apply for the K3 I have my passport already bearing my single name. so what we did: in the whole process of forms I used my single name and not my married name: I am confused too once I got into the States how could I changes my single name into married name?

Hey ,

you will have to send a copy of your marriage certificate to the service center when you receive your green card, with form i-90 which carries a fee of $290 plus $80 for biometrics if applicable.

Glad to know that it makes thinks easier for you!

In relation to your passport, I would advise you not to change your passport to married name at this point. You cannot have the visa in maiden name and your passport in your married name, they must match. I was given this information by nvc when I received my appointment letter with maiden name, though I had filed all the paper work in my married name. They told me that I have submitted the info from my passport and it shows that I still have my maiden name in it. Therefore , they cannot change anything. I think that changing anything at this stage will only cause delays and confusion. I would gather all the info on changing passport from your home country , take info with you, once you are here you can renew your passport. Only bad thing here is the cost for changing your name!

I wish you all the best !!! God bless.

I will definitely follow your advised. If I only knew this ahead of time about the cost for changing single to married name I could of have change my passport to married name right away. Anyways, thank you again Chavelle. God bless you.

Hi there again, that was really annoying somehow becasue I spend almost 1,000 pesos to FEdEx the copy of my ammended passport to NVC so that my married name will appear on the VISA once I receive it...but as I told it didn't happen.

During my interview, I told the pre-screener that if my VISA will get printed I want my married name on it. I don't know if he found me sarcastic or whatever that time, coz I sounded too confident. But as far as I can remember, I still modestly (and timely) ask him when he handed me the DS form I submitted and he told me to review if any information there has changed and he asked me to sign it (this is the one when the pre screener ask to review and sign the DS form....I think everybody go through this). SO I told "Umm...pwede po ba na pag narelease na yung VISA ko po eh married name ko na po yung gamitin nyu", I told that kindly and not with loud tone, it also comes to my mind to say that since he handed me the DS form and he told me "Please review it, then tell me if something has changed" Actually, I thought that what was written in that DS form was my single name that is why I told him the statement, I forgot that when I fill up the DS form I signed my married name. Recalling that incident, I was like uh-oh. Then when the Final Interview came, this is when an American Consul interviewed me, she asked "Would you like your married name to appear on your VISA?" I said "Yes, Ma'm please" "Okay, that's no problem". And so on....

Then when I saw my Immigraton VISA and that Delbros delivery guy ask me if there is error...I was like hummm...Okay, it's fine. But at the back of my mind "Jeez, it still has my name when I was single"

I don't know if it is a case to case basis but also regarding this passport ammended thing, you will do this in DFA office.

The requirements that was asked me to submit are:

-accomplish form from them with 2x2 pic atteached(I forgot the form but they just give it and have you fill it up)

-original copy of passport

-xerox copy of passport

-original copy of NSO authenticated Married Certificate

-xerox copy of CFO certificate

Fee of 100.00

After 3 days I receive the ammended passport and it was just a dry seal to the second page of my old passport. I expected they will give some sort of new passport or they will change the biographical page of the passport but it was just a dry seal next to "Not Valid in Iraq" page.

Here was the exact e-mail from NVC when I inquired for change of name:

Dear Sir or Madam,

Your inquiry has been received at the National Visa Center (NVC).

The NVC is unable to honor your request to change the applicant's name, as a copy of the applicant's passport containing the applicant's current name was not received. If you wish the name to be changed, please submit a copy the biographical page of the applicant's passport to the address below.

National Visa Center

ATTN: WC

32 Rochester Avenue

Portsmouth, NH 03801

Then I immediately submitted the ammended passport and expedited it (FedEx). Whew, then after 7 days. I received a letter from NVC that they acknowledge my name change.

You're welcome :star:

Hi, my wife change her passport to her married name during the time it was at NVC, they told me she can keep her single name passport, and the visa will be issued to her in her single name, but if she changes it she should do now while at the NVC becuse after the nvc it will just complicate things, so I think you should just keep your single name now.You might want your husby to call the NVC and talk to a operator to make sure though:-)
