Hello all, My fiancée and I are in the middle of going through the K1 visa process. I work for a company and want to include my fiancée into the company's health insurance plan after we get married. But after doing some research, it looks like she won't be able to be in my insurance plan until after she gets her green card. What is everyone's experience with this? How did your fiancé or fiancée purchase health insurance while waiting for his/her green card? What potential issues could my fiancée face with having a separate health insurance while she waits for her green card?

My fiance is arriving next week on a K-1 visa. I have been trying to purchase health insurance for her. I am self employed and use the VA for my medical needs, so I don't have a policy I can add her to. This last week, I have contacted several health insurance companies to get quotes and see if I can purchase a policy for my fiance. All companies have turned me down. They have stated that they can only do policies for citizens or permanent residents. They have all referred me to the government exchange for more information. I am not trying to purchase anything through an exchange, I would simply like to purchase a private health care plan, but it seems all the companies I have interacted with only go through the exchange. The agents I spoke with also stated thye wouldn't be able to sell insurance even if she were a citizen because of the enrollment period. They stated to qualify for an exception, she must already have valid insurance. Given the length of time until a green card would be received, I think there must be a better option. I have not been able to find anything that would forbid someone arriving on a K-1 visa from buying health insurance from the searches I have done. Is there anyone who can provide anymore information on this topic? I'm sure we're not the first people in this situation and there must be some company or health plan for those in our situation.

VisaJourney has been a wonderful resource in for me (USC) and my fiancé, who will arrive to the US soon on a K1 visa. I myself only recently located to the US and am not working yet, so I am unable to add my fiancé to an employer health plan. I am covered through a short-term plan that I bought on the private market through a broker. Originally I intended to buy a similar plan for my fiancé, but the broker notified me such plans are available for US citizens and residents only. Clearly I need to get job with employer-provided healthcare ASAP (working on it!), but for now I have found these two alternatives: 1) Travelers insurance targeted at K1 holders: Simple Googling turns up several sites that sell travelers insurance and specifically market it as an option for K1 visa holders. There are many plans but Patriot America Plus seems to appear most often. I've read independent reviews for Patriot America Plus that indicate 1) people most commonly buy it for parents visiting the US, and 2) it's a bare bones plan that often brands sudden medical issues as "pre-existing conditions" to avoid paying out. TLDR, seems a little sketchy but could be fine as temporary coverage for a young, healthy person like my fiancé? 2) ACA Plans: This helpful stickied thread on VJ indicates a K1 holder can buy a plan off the ACA marketplace. But are the ACA plans available to K1 holders who just arrived but are not yet married or applied for AOS? Also, given she can't work and will have no income, she's guaranteed to qualify for subsidies on ACA - but will this factor into 'public charge' issues or green card considerations down the road? I'm leery of taking any public assistance at this stage. If you have experience with either of these options (or others), it would be great to hear your thoughts about which one is preferable. And naturally I hope to get a job soon to end this mess for good. Thank you!

Anyone with experience with what’s the best short term medical insurance coverage for parents with lawful permanent residence status shuttling between the US and their home country? Thanks!

My husband came here on his k1 visa last July. I left my job a couple months ago to become self employed, so we now have marketplace insurance. We were able to get the coverage just fine, but now they're stating that to keep the coverage, we need to provide a document with 'either the admitted date or allowable duration of stay'. I already gave them his I94 and visa with the date he was admitted on it. I submitted two different letters explaining that there literally is no document saying the duration of his stay, because he is here indefinitely. They continue to state that his documents are insufficient and seem to be ignoring my explanation. They don't give any context other than the message above, and continue to demand a document that does not exist. There is no reason this should be happening because Adjustment for LPR is listed as an approved status on the marketplace website. We've given them EVERY document we have (I797, I94, marriage license, visa/passport), which are all on their approved list. The last thing we got from USCIS is the I797 stating that his I485 is pending, but haven't heard ANYTHING since that came on November 6, 2020. He doesn't have his EAD yet, that's also still pending since Nov. So we have nothing else to give them. I have spoken to 4 supervisors who understood and said that our documents should be fine. I have submitted multiple letters clearly explaining the situation. I have submitted an appeal which I'm waiting on. I've tried to schedule a call with a case worker (they have to call me though, I can't call them, and they kept trying when I wasn't available). I have done absolutely everything I can think of. Has anyone else faced this? I don't think my spouse should have to settle for some crappy short term/catastrophic insurance that doesn't cover anything, which we will have to do if he loses coverage. To me that shouldn't happen, especially when the marketplace's own website says that folks waiting on their green card are eligible! If that's really true, then they should understand that not all immigrants are given a document in the interim until they get their green card. This has been so frustrating... any input is appreciated.
