I wanted to make this post as I had tried looking EVERYWHERE online for a definitive answer and never found one. In the hopes this can help someone else in Texas, here is my experience.
(I understand that this can differ depending upon which State you reside in so I can only relay my experience in Texas)
I applied for a DL after passing my very first road test in Texas in August (2023) and was issued a DL with “limited term” and its expiration was 8 months later in April. Even though I searched and searched online my understanding was that limited term is assigned to those who are temporarily visiting the State. When I reached out to Texas DPS via email right away I was told it was nothing to do with them and it was in fact to do with DHS. When I reached out to DHS I didn’t get a response.
Today I went to renew my DL and asked about why I got the limited term on my DL and was told that was what was given to them when they ran my GC a couple of times in the SAVE system. Thankfully today I have an 8 year expiration DL coming in the post for me soon.
