If one has not filed for AOS yet, how can they obtain an AP in case of a family emgerency? I am hoping this will not happen but am trying to be prepared for the worst case senario.
AP can be filed for with or after AOS, not before because the K-1 is not in "Pending AOS" Status, they are still just a visitor to the USA, AP is an interim benefit to AOS.
Emergency AP is done by scheduling an info-pass appointment to local field office, and providing evidence that an emergency exists and they can issue AP at the field office, but again this is an interim benefit while waiting for AOS.

If you have not filed for AOS, you can not obtain AP. AP only applies to those waiting to adjust status. If you leave before filing AOS & waiting for your AP, you'll have to apply for a K3 and wait abroad.
