We've found someone who is willing to be our co-sponsor, but he is afraid it is like signing for a lease. He thinks he can get into major trouble later. He wants to know exactly what is involved in the process. Can someone clarify the whole co-sponsor thing for us?? Like, what does a co-sponsor need to provide (document wise) & how long he has to be involved in the whole thing.

My yearly income hits about $1000 over the poverty level line, but we'll be living happily off it. But I think it is best to find a co-sponsor since the income kinda hits close to requirement, that it might make the visa peeps question things...

Thank you

I think it is moethan co-signing a lease.

But it is all detailed on the form itself I-864

It is a big ask.

Hey smile.gif Welcome to VJ good.gif
I'm assuming you are filing for K1 since this was posted in the K1 Forum smile.gif

The co sponsor's responsibilities are the same as that of a petitioning relative. The affidavit of support is a legally binding agreement to provide financial support to the person(s) immigrating to the U.S.

Click Here for some information about the affidavit of support.

Notice at the bottom it says:

"The US fiance is ALWAYS the primary sponsor, but may have a co-sponsor. If there is a co-sponsor, both the
US fiance and the co-sponsor will EACH have to fill out the affidavit I-134 or I-864 and EACH will have to provide
supporting documentation."

Best of luck to you!!!
