I brought fresh cranberries. Never tried, so I don't know if I'll like. I didn't like the jellied canned one nor the other canned one, it's yucky.

you do have to cook those, Nessa, & add sugar - otherwise they wll be very bitter!

really? I have brown sugar. Should I just cook with water and sugar?

Simple Cranberry Sauce

Ingredients:

* by volume, two parts cranberries
* by volume, one part water (or less)
* by volume, one part tightly-packed brown sugar

Method:

Rinse the berries and remove stems, but don't take too much trouble. Place them in the water, add sugar, and boil them lightly until all the berries have popped open, stirring frequently to make sure the sugar doesn't stick to the bottom of the pan. Cook and keep stirring until the sauce has thickened to your preferred consistency, on medium heat.

**Sauce takes about 20 minutes to prepare. It may take longer if you prefer a thicker sauce.

mmm! yes.gif Any excuse for champers!

My recipe:

Cranberry Sauce
Yields: 12 servings

INGREDIENTS:
1/2 c. white sugar
1/2 c. brown sugar
2/3 c. orange juice
1/3 c. water
1 (12 ounce) package fresh cranberries

In a medium saucepan over medium heat, dissolve the sugar in the orange juice.
Stir in the cranberries, and cook until they start to pop (about 10 minutes).
Remove from heat, and transfer to a bowl. Cranberry sauce will thicken as it
cools. Cool overnight.

I prefer a cranberry chutney. We've never had the canned jelly Marilyn, so I don't know what it tastes like. blush.gif

it tastes like cranberry jelly.... whistling.gif

Well yeah, I was thinking more of mouth feel as opposed to actual taste. tongue.gif I'm not sure if I'd like it as a jelly.

You know those gross little packets of 'jelly' at breakfast places? Taste/texture like that but cranberry-esque.

So far everything that you don't like is "gross" or "crap".... I haven't seen anyone calling homemade stuff names, even if they don't like it.

I grew up on the canned stuff and love it.

I have tried homemade and love that too.

I prefer canned but homemade is ok, too. As long as it doesn't have orange juice or zest in it. I don't want to taste anything but cranberries. No nuts or anything like that in it either.

I found these recipes....

Cranberry Ice

Ingredients

8 cups water
4 cups fresh cranberries
3 cups sugar
Preparation
Combine all ingredients in a Dutch oven; bring to a boil. Reduce heat, and cook 15 minutes or until all cranberries pop. Strain cranberry mixture through a fine sieve over a bowl, discarding solids. Cover and chill.

Pour the cranberry mixture into the freezer can of an ice-cream freezer, and freeze according to manufacturer's instructions. Spoon cranberry ice into a freezer-safe container; cover and freeze 1 hour or until ready to serve.
Yield

10 cups (serving size: 1/2 cup)

Cranberry Ice

INGREDIENTS

* 2 (12 ounce) packages fresh cranberries
* 2 cups white sugar
* 1 1/4 cups fresh orange juice
* 1 cup fresh lemon juice
DIRECTIONS

1. In a large pot, add cranberries and enough water to cover. Boil until cranberries begin to pop. Drain and put through a food mill placed over a large bowl.
2. While still warm add sugar to dissolve in the warm berries. The amount of sugar may vary depending on the tartness of the berries, so if you decide to add more sugar remember that the mixture will be tarter when it has been frozen.
3. After dissolving the sugar in the berries, stir in fresh squeezed orange juice and fresh squeezed lemon juice. Pour in 8 or 9 inch square pan and freeze overnight. Take out of the freezer 5-10 minutes before cutting.

I put other. I can't stand cranberries with turkey and gravy. YUCK!!!!!!!!!
But if I HAD to eat them, it would NEVER be canned. You shouldn't be able to "slice" cranberry sauce.
I do like fresh cranberry muffins or scones - NO CRAISINS though.
Kazan' Tiger
I'll drink some cranberry juice on occassion, but have zero interest in cranberry sauce. As others have said, why do you "slice" sauce? If I want sauce, then apple will do just fine.

Not here. The can (Ocean Spray) even says "Jellied Cranberry Sauce". Here in Indiana, nothing is called jelly unless it comes in a jar and is usually spread on toast.

Homemade cranberry sauce is easy. Basically just cooking cranberries with sugar. The way my mom cooks it, you can totally tell that it is WHOLE BERRIES. (But I'm still not eating it on my turkey whistling.gif )

One bag of Cranberries
One Cup of Sugar
One Cup of Water

Boil then simmer until all berries have "popped" and mixture is kinda thick. Then let cool and stick in the fridge. That's it.

Some people add orange juice and/or zest, but that's just wrong.... lol

I made my own cranberry sauce this year and I was very surprised to find that when it sat in the fridge overnight it came out exactly the same consistency and flavour as the stuff from a can! So don't feel guilty about eating the canned stuff...
Wacken
I love either homemade sauce or whole berry sauce out of the can. I can't say I am a fan of sliced sauce.
