Got a question about the ssn card ,
I like to know if thats true when you applied for k1 and checked the box on ds 156 to resive your card do they realy forward your information to the local ss office and you get your SSN card automaticialy in mail 2-3 weeks after you enter the states ? , or is that false and you have to aply for it your self as soon as your married ??
if its true and you get the card in mail ( with maiden name ) is it a big deal you change name after the marriage ?
any input is apriciated thank you
Krikit
I think the auto-ssn only applies to the K-3 visa holders. K-1's need to go in person to apply.

K1 visa holders have to go into their local SSA branch office to apply. Give 'em two weeks so that your info is in the SAVE system. If you're married by then just apply in your married name, and bring your marriage certificate and your passport. smile.gif

So how do you change your name on you SSN to your married name after you get married? Does it cost money to do that? I think I asked this in another thread but I can't remember what forum...lol

I'm not sure whether it costs money to get a name change due to marriage. My understanding is that it doesn't. A copy of the marriage certificate should suffice as proof of the name change (like it does in other instances, ie. driver's license, etc).

Personally, if you were getting married at a date close to your POE, I'd suggest waiting until after the marriage to apply for the SSN just to make it simple. There's no rule that says you have to apply for the SSN exactly two weeks after the POE, just that you should apply for it two weeks before the expiry of your I-94.

Bee and I got married a week after my POE, so by default we applied in my married name. The SSA branch we went to didn't have any issues with that. smile.gif

Thanks Nini..

So say Nick and I get married like 2 months after I enter the states, I would just apply for my SSN and my AOS all at the same time? Don't I need my SSN so I can use my EAD? I'm assuming you get your SSN rather quickly....sigh...this is so far off but I like to be informed.

NVM I found the answer...
SSN will not be issued without a GC and EAD after the I-94 expires. Cool.

So we should get married and I apply for my SSN and AOS at the same time. YAY good.gif

I went in to the office about a week after entering on K1.

Doing a name change on your SSN doesn't cost anything. You can do it via mail or in person. I just did mine last month and it was painless. Took 5 mins to get called to a window, another 5 mins for the clerk to look at my info and had the card in my mailbox in 1.5 weeks.

good.gif I took Claudeth to SSA about two weeks after she arrived and she received her card a week later.
